EXCLUSIVE: Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen actress Anchal Singh on her viral post, “It’s sad that we are ashamed to admit we currently don’t have work”

Anchal Singh, known for playing one of the leads named Purva in Netflix’s Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen and Teji in Sony LIV’s Undekhi, recently wrote down a post on Instagram and Facebook sharing that she hasn’t acted in any project since last six months despite receiving acclaim for the two aforementioned shows and some films.

In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama, when Anchal was asked the reason for having to write such a post, she said, “A lot of people have been asking me why I wasn’t a part of any award show or any interview or why my name wasn’t mentioned anywhere. They also ask when will my next work be seen and what I am up to currently. Because of the love I got from people of the industry and the audience, I wanted to be honest with everybody to show the truth; as in what my current situation is. So I just wrote that. Apna dil halka kar liya unke saath.”

Anchal said that she didn’t expect the post to go viral. She was also surprised to see people calling her move as “gutsy” and “courageous” both in comments and private messages.

“I was like, sach hi toh bola hai,” said Anchal. “Sach kabse itna courageous ho gaya? I was just showing them the reality that getting such acclaim doesn’t mean you have climbed the ladder of success. It means that you have the ability but you need to prove yourself three-four times. For example, I was watching an interview of Salim-Javed sirs. They said that after writing 10 hit films, people started saying they have arrived only during their 11th film.”

Anchal also didn’t feel hesitant to admit that she doesn’t have any work in hand right now. “It is also a little sad that we are scared and ashamed to admit that we aren’t doing any work right now. It doesn’t mean your journey isn’t important and you are less than others. It doesn’t mean you won’t work from now onwards. It only means that this is your current state. In my case, after a lot of struggle, I have still done work. But there are so many people who have a lot of talent but they aren’t getting opportunities. So, it’s important that we stick by each other and offer faith.”

Anchal has also had one experience where she was selected for a project, but was told that she has been replaced just before she was about to take a flight to shoot for the same. Sharing her reaction on this, she said, “This incident happened before Undekhi. It was for a film. It did not work out. I just told myself that my journey is long and I will have to work harder. You need to prove yourself repeatedly in order to be irreplaceable.”

Some time ago, Anchal completed shooting for one Punjabi and one international film. However, they haven’t been able to release yet and she doesn’t know when they will. But she has kept the temptation of asking the respective producers about the release dates at bay. “I know it is a tough place to be,” she said. “And to keep your sanity, it is important to tell yourself that your job is just to act by giving your heart and mind. And after that I need to unlearn that process. Then it depends on the producers and the makers.”

During these times, Anchal says, it is the little things that are keeping her spirits high. Like, Imtiaz Ali recognising her for her work in Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen when she bumped into him at a party.
