Veteran Bollywood actress Sharmila Tagore returned to film industry after 12 years. She had acted in Break Ke Baad featuring Deepika Padukone and Imran Khan in 2010 post which she recently did Gulmohar this month. The film received rave reviews. Tagore opened up on her character in the film. Tagore portrayed the character of a grandmother who opened up to her granddaughter revealing that she too had fallen in love with a woman when she was young. Talking about the same, Sharmila told Roger Ebert.com, “[I felt] a little bit of apprehension, but the way they have dealt with it in the script is very subtle, not in your face. And I've been surprised, really. The audience has really accepted it. They’re okay with it. It’s not being underlined, or underscored, or an in-your-face kind of statement. It's kind of an internal evolution of a person. So, it's at that level.” Talking about her character in Gulmohar, she said, “It's been her decision all the way, whatever the need of that time was. And her growth has been sort of powered by that. If you see the film, you realize what sort of a person she is. She is connected to everybody and she still prioritizes her own self. There's nothing wrong in that. She's 76 now, in the film. So now she wants to be free, basically.” Earlier at the screening of the film Gulmohar, Sharmila had said, “Thank you so much and I hope you liked the movie. I have seen it for the third time and I was still crying profusely, although I am in it.” She further added, “Of course, working with Manoj (Bajpayee) and Suraj (Sharma), actually, Suraj makes you cry. But I kind of vibe with this young lot. They make it so difficult for themselves. They can easily take their father's money and get on. But they have to punish themselves.” Gulmohar was directed by Rahul V.Chittella. The film saw the luminous and graceful Sharmila Tagore return to cinema after 12 years, with acting powerhouses Manoj Bajpayee, Amol Palekar, Simran and Suraj Sharma. Gulmohar, which was set in Delhi, chronicles the Batra family's final four days in their 34-year-old house before they move to a new city. Written by Rahul Chittella and Arpita Mukherjee, Gulmohar started streaming on Disney+ Hotstar from March 3, 2023.
