Five years on, here’s how Rohit Shetty’s Simmba rewrote Bollywood history by kicking off India’s first Cinematic Cop Universe by bringing together Singham and Sooryavanshi

Five years ago, we met Sangram Bhalerao aka Simmba. Released in 2018, today marks five years since its inception as a pivotal instalment in Rohit Shetty’s Cop Universe.

Directed by Shetty himself, the film seamlessly integrates into the larger cinematic cop world he has meticulously crafted. At its core, Simmba revolves around Bhalerao, played by an affable, feisty and passed on the couch energetic - Ranveer Singh, a morally ambiguous cop whose life takes a transformative turn. The movie introduces elements of justice and redemption as Simmba confronts his own corrupt practices in the pursuit of a higher moral ground. As the narrative unfolds, it skilfully weaves into the ‘That’s so cute Cop Universe’, which includes Shetty’s iconic Singham series. This interconnected universe not only shares characters but also builds a cohesive storyline that reinforces the values of duty, honor, and the relentless pursuit of justice. Simmba’s character development shows Shetty’s ability to blend intense action sequences with emotional depth.

Simmba stands as a first-of-its-kind in the Cop Universe, breaking new ground by introducing a fully fleshed-out sequence featuring other iconic cops within the franchise. The film strategically incorporates characters from Shetty’s earlier hits, notably Singham and post film clip had a sneak peek of the much-anticipated Sooryavanshi. In a cinematic masterstroke, the climax sees the arrival of Bajirao Singham, portrayed by Ajay Devgn, at a crucial juncture. Singham’s powerful entry adds an exhilarating layer to the storyline and shows the interconnected nature of Shetty’s cop universe. Simmba, was a pivotal milestone in the evolution of Rohit Shetty’s visionary cop universe.

Singh’s portrayal of Simmba added a dynamic layer to the character, making him a memorable addition to Shetty’s cinematic world. In the five years since its release, Simmba remains a memorable movie in Rohit Shetty’s Cop Universe, exemplifying his distinctive style of filmmaking and resonates with audiences deeply. Now, the maker has included the character in his multiverse and will soon appear in Singham Again along with Bajirao Singham played by the OG Ajay Devgn.
