Sandeep Reddy Vanga defends Ranvijay’s 'Big Pelvis' comment in Animal; meant as a compliment to Geetanjali

Even with the polarizing reactions to Ranbir Kapoor starrer Animal, it continues to reign at the box office. Many called the movie a glorification of violent characters, called out misogyny and more. However, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga isn’t faced with the reactions. However, he has an explanation for the ‘big pelvis’ dialogue which Ranbir’s character Ranvijay says to Rashmika Mandanna’s Geetanjali.

In the movie, Ranvijay (Ranbir Kapoor) tells Geetanjali, “You have a big pelvis,” after she calls off her engagement. She asks him, “Are you calling me fat?” Ranvijay insists that it was a compliment and that she had ‘childbearing hips.’ Talking to Galatta Plus, Vanga was asked if he incorporated the said dialogue in the movie to add to the shock value. The director said that he was meant to be a compliment. Sandeep explained that Ranvijay couldn’t express his emotions directly to Geetajali. He said, “He’s trying a different route to explain to her because it’s her engagement day and they were not in touch. Coming with that force and saying ‘Listen Geetanjali I really love your pelvis.’ He is trying to explain a theory which is related to the character, the title also, for the audience when they are watching the film it doesn’t seem like what theory he is talking about.”

“I thought of shooting (that) he would just be playing with the petals of the flowers and he’d just put his hand on her feet. I wanted to shoot that but I thought I would not show it. I thought on the shoot day ‘Let’s not do that and again give a shock,” revealed Vanga.

“I felt like she was walking away, he knew that if he let her go without saying one more line, he knew that she was gone. So how should I say that I am seeing my future with you? I want to marry you. I thought, in these situations, boys behave very differently sometimes. Your intention is something else but you end up saying something else. So, he didn’t know what to say. This was the brief given to Ranbir also. Suddenly he doesn’t know what to say and he says Geetanjali got a big pelvis. He is giving a reason that I’m seeing a future with you that we’ll get married and have babies. I thought that was a compliment. I never thought…how you found it ugly,” he said.

On December 19, Sandeep Reddy Vanga and Bhushan Kumar officially announced the Animal sequel with a post that read “It’s a partnership built on trust, fueled by creative freedom, and fortified by an unbreakable bond. Producer Bhushan Kumar and Director #SandeepReddyVanga unveil the next cinematic wonders—Prabhas’ Spirit, Animal Park, and an Allu Arjun saga—the chapters that follow the monumental success of Kabir Singh and #Animal.”

On partnership with Kumar, Vanga said, “The kind of freedom he gives in terms of my creativity and the liberty to choose any song makes me feel at home at T-Series, and there is nothing more than that a director needs.” The director said that the producer wasn’t worried about the budget and did not interfere during the shoot of the film. He added, “I realized after the movie was made that we never discussed the budget,” he was quoted by Indian Express.

In India, Animal has collected Rs. 519.64 crores. The film also stars Anil Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, and Triptii Dimri. It was released in theatres on December 1, 2023. ALSO READ: Ranbir Kapoor enjoys dinner with Sanjay Dutts daughter Trishala in New York: “When an Animal comes to visit”
