Karan Johar DEFENDS appreciating Animal: “I didn't go deep into the moral communication”

Karan Johar has once again addressed his love for the 2023 action-thriller film Animal, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga and starring Ranbir Kapoor. The film, which became a massive box office success grossing over Rs 900 crore, was also met with significant criticism for its portrayal of violence and a potentially misogynistic narrative.

Speaking at the Forbes India Leadership Awards 2024, the director-produer acknowledged the ongoing debate surrounding Animal. He explained his perspective, stating, "There's been a lot of debate on Animal... Personally, truly honestly, I saw it as a character film based on a character who was deeply dysfunctional, inherently violent, who had many emotional issues – and I loved the treatment.”

The 51-year-old filmmaker highlights how he was particularly impressed by Vanga's storytelling and technical execution, rather than focusing on the film's moral message. "I didn't go deep into the moral communication of the film – I was so swept by the narrative and the way the filmmaker told the story of it..."

He continued and stated that even if his opinion attracts criticism, he feels a responsibility to be honest about his artistic appreciation. For the unversed, at the Mega Pan India Roundtable 2023 organized by Galatta Plus, Karan said that Animal is the best film of the year, and its success is a ‘game-changer.’

Animal's critical reception was divided, with some praising the performances, particularly Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, and Triptii Dimri. However, veterans like Javed Akhtar and Swanand Kirkire were among those who voiced strong disapproval of the film's content.
