Alia Bhatt shares behind-the-scenes prep for MET Gala 2024 in exquisite Sabyasachi Mukherjee saree with her Anaita Shroff Adajania and the glam squad, watch

Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt lit up the red carpet at the prestigious Met Gala 2024 on May 6, 2024. This marked Bhatt's second appearance at the highly anticipated fashion event, making her one of the select few Indian celebrities to grace the prestigious gala. This year, Bhatt took the opportunity to showcase the exquisite artistry of Indian fashion, stepping out in a breathtaking creation by renowned designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee. And now, Vogue has unveiled the behind-the-scenes of getting the Met Gala look together with the help of Sabyasachi, stylist Anaita Shroff Adajania, make-up artist Puneet B Saini and hair stylist Amit Thakur along with the entourage.

Stylist Anaita Shroff Adajania said, “When we think about time, there's so many different ways to think about it. We did a lot of research on archival portraits of Parsi nobility, and beautiful Indians wearing delicate pastel sarees. And I think what Sabyasachi did for us is he contemporize that. So we have additional drapes, and we have beautiful fringes. To actually move forward, you can't not look into the past and that's what we've done to create our garden of time.”

Celebrity make-up artist Puneet B Saini, who has worked with Alia Bhatt for almost a decade, revealed, “We always discuss the look before we start. The theme of the Met Gala, this time is called The Garden of Time, and there were a lot of old-world references that were referred to. Alia had a few references that she shared. We combined elements from each reference, what it came down to was to keep it looking very surreal, and she had to be outdoors, so we enhanced her natural freckles and added a little bit more. For the mouth also, we wanted the colour to be a lot more sumptuous and rose-like.”

Talking about adding ethereal jewellery to the look, Sabyasachi said, “I love the three-dimensional aspect of the craft and I love jewellery because it helps me tinker a lot. I love mathematics, I'm great with geometry, and so I think the jewellery and stones and proportion comes naturally to me.”

The 2024 Met Gala theme, "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion," served as a springboard for creative interpretations. The official dress code, "The Garden of Time," drew inspiration from a 1962 story, hinting at a floral and botanical extravaganza on the red carpet. As Vogue revealed, the accompanying exhibit would showcase a treasure trove of fashion history, featuring over 250 rare pieces spanning four centuries. From iconic designs by Schiaparelli and Dior to the meticulously preserved ball gown by Charles Frederick Worth, the exhibit promised a captivating journey through time.

Alia Bhatt's social media post offered a glimpse into the inspiration behind her captivating ensemble. She described it as "a call to the Garden of Time," an ode to artistic expression and the enduring nature of beauty. She emphasized the power of time and meticulous craftsmanship, highlighting how creations made with dedication can transcend fleeting trends. She recognized the saree as the perfect embodiment of tradition and innovation, and in the skilled hands of Sabyasachi, this vision blossomed into a masterpiece.

Drawing inspiration from the timeless elegance of Indian nobility, the saree showcased intricate craftsmanship. Delicate hand embroidery, precious stones, and elegant beadwork were meticulously incorporated, with a touch of the roaring twenties evident in the fringed detailing. The colour palette paid homage to nature's beauty, reflecting the hues of the earth, sky, and sea. Bhatt's hair and makeup evoked a sense of delicate nostalgia. An elevated coiffure, embellished with intricate braids, and soft freckles added a touch of whimsy, a nod to the gentle passage of time.

Creating this masterpiece was no small feat. Bhatt acknowledged the collaborative effort of a team of 163 dedicated individuals, including master craftspeople, embroiderers, artists, and dyers. A collective total of 1,965 man-hours went into the creation of this ethereal saree, a testament to the boundless love and meticulous dedication poured into its creation. Bhatt expressed her gratitude to her team, including stylists, makeup artists, and hairstylists, for their invaluable contribution to this journey through the "Garden of Time."
