10 Years of Kick: Sajid Nadiadwala reveals that Randeep Hooda on the first day gave 27 takes and never gave a second take later on; also says “Many of my HODs did not agree on Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s casting but I was very sure”

One of the most loved films of Salman Khan, Kick, was released 10 years ago, on July 25. A few months after its release, the makers of the film released a special coffee table book ‘Kick: A Karizmatic Journey’. It consists of not just rare BTS images but also some fascinating trivia. One of the most interesting bits about the book is Jacqueline Fernandez’s quotes and Sajid Nadiadwala talking about Randeep Hooda and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

Jacqueline Fernandez says in the book, “My life has taken a 360-degree turn after being signed for this dream project. I feel I now have two heroes in my life – Mr Sajid Nadiadwala and Mr Salman Khan. The only negative I can point out about Kick is that it has come to an end. In my life, I have never felt such a personal transformation. I owe it to the entire team of Kick for what I have learnt from each of them and the memories they have given to me.”

Regarding Randeep Hooda, producer-director Sajid Nadiadwala revealed, “For the character of Hemanshu, I was very convinced that I wanted Randeep for the role, right from the scripting stage. On the first day of the shoot, we tried doing very different stuff for the role and I was not very satisfied on the monitor. We had about 27 takes, till the time Randeep gave the shot exactly, as I was looking for. From that day, we never had any issues and for all the shots thereafter, he did not cross the second take.”

As for Nawazuddin Siddiqui, he said, “He comes at a very important point in the second half of the film, where there is a fear that the film can become a little boring. I was always looking for him, though he was the last possible choice on anybody's mind. Many of my HODs did not agree on his casting but I was very sure. I always prayed that his character would go well with the audience and then we would have a fantastic second half. And that’s exactly what happened.”

23 Years of Lagaan: “A famous painter heard 'O Paalanhaare' and told me, ‘Tum jhooth bolte ho. Ek atheist aisa bhajan nahin likh sakta’” - Javed Akhtar

One of the greatest films of all time, Lagaan (2001), completed 23 years on June 15. Starring Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh, it was a fictional period drama about a group of villagers learning cricket, a game alien to them, and playing it against the British. In the pre-climax, when the villagers fear defeat, they collectively pray to God. This is when 'O Paalanhaare' is played and it leaves viewers teary-eyed. The song took a life of its own and is one of the most loved film devotional songs of all time. Many are surprised to know that Javed Akhtar, an atheist, penned this track.
