Madhuri Dixit reflects on early career criticism: “During my time, they thought I was too…”

Bollywood icon Madhuri Dixit has mesmerized audiences for decades with her acting, dance skills, and charismatic personality. However, her journey to stardom was not without challenges. In a candid throwback interview, Madhuri reflected on the harsh criticisms she faced at the beginning of her career. As an outsider in the film industry, she had to endure significant scrutiny and judgment, particularly regarding her appearance.

Skinny-shaming and industry standards

In an older interaction with Bollywood Hungama, Madhuri recounted being subjected to skinny shaming. Directors often criticized her for being too thin to play the heroine, urging her to gain weight. She recalled, “During my time, they thought I was too skinny to begin with. Yeh heroine isko thoda mota karo, they used to say. I don’t think that’s an issue now.” Despite these comments, Madhuri persevered and proved her talent, eventually becoming one of Bollywood's leading ladies.

Life after marriage and career break

Madhuri Dixit also spoke about a significant decision she made post-marriage: taking a hiatus from her career. After marrying Dr. Shriram Nene, a renowned cardio-thoracic surgeon, the couple settled in the US, and Madhuri stepped away from the film industry at the peak of her career. Reflecting on this choice, she said, “For me, that was one of the dreams I had for myself. I’m going to have kids and that’s going to be fun.” This decision marked a substantial shift in her life, but she embraced it wholeheartedly.

Dedication to dance despite double standards

Madhuri is known for her dedication to classical dance forms, particularly Kathak. Throughout her career, she has delivered numerous iconic dance performances. In an interview with Bollywood Bubble, she highlighted the double standards she faced in the industry. As a mother of two, she received criticism for continuing to pursue her passion for dance. Madhuri expressed, “Aisa hota hai ki alag alag logon ki alag alag soch hoti hai, aur bohot se log aise kehte hai ki aap to maa ban gayi hai abhi aap kyu dance kar rahi hai? Aap baithiye, aap ghar dekhiye, aap aisa kijiye aap waisa kijiye. Lekin mujhe aise lagta hai ki yeh toh hum sab karte hi hai.”

Overcoming adversity and inspiring generations

Madhuri Dixit's journey is a testament to her resilience and determination. Despite facing early criticism and industry double standards, she has carved out an illustrious career and continues to inspire generations with her talent and dedication. Her story serves as a powerful reminder that true success comes from staying true to oneself and persevering in the face of adversity.
