1 Year of Gadar 2 EXCLUSIVE: Anil Sharma says "I had told Sunny Deol, You DESERVE to charge Rs. 50 crores per project. This film would help you achieve that'"; reveals his next film with Nana Patekar is titled Vanwaas: A Journey Of Life

The all-time blockbuster Gadar 2 completed a year on August 11. On this joyous occasion, its director Anil Sharma spoke exclusively with Bollywood Hungama about the much-loved sequel, bond with Sunny Deol and his upcoming films.

Time flies. I can’t believe it’s been a year already since the madness unleashed by Gadar 2… (Laughs) Ji bilkul. Aisa lag raha hai ki bas kal hi ki baat hai!

How has life changed for you after Gadar 2? Does the industry view you differently now? Public ka pyaar toh kal bhi tha, aaj bhi hai. But the perspective of some people in the industry has definitely changed and that is bound to happen when you succeed in life. Some perspectives also change when you fail. But personally, main pehle bhi mast tha aur aaj bhi mast hoon. There’s no change in my life. The only change that has happened after Gadar 2 is that earlier, I used to make 1 film in 2-3 years. But after Gadar 2’s release, I immediately started work on my next movie, starring Nana Patekar and Utkarsh Sharma. Its shoot is already completed.

Sunny Deol’s life has changed and how in this one year and once again, people have realized that he’s a force to reckon with. Do you feel happy that somewhere you played a part in his comeback? When I told Sunny sir about Gadar 2, I told him, ‘You should do this film. You deserve to charge Rs. 50 crores per project. This film would help you achieve that’.

The demand for the film was such that its shows were happening at 3:00 am. I woke up at 7:30 am and I had no idea about it. My wife told me about it and showed videos of the madness happening in the cinemas. She had tears in her eyes. Mere aankh mein bhi aansoo aa gaye. I called Sunny sir. He was also watching the videos. I told him, ‘Ho gaya na?’. He replied, ‘Haan, ho gaya’! It was an emotional moment for us. Sunny sir deserved it as he has always been a superstar. But people measure stardom through box office success and I don’t blame them either. Even in the industry, nobody imagined in their wildest dreams that Gadar 2 would be such a historic hit, except me. A week before release, I had mailed Zee Studios that ‘Gadar 2 would collect Rs. 500 crores’. I said the same thing to them when I signed the contract with them. Mujhe bharosa tha ishwar pe. Aur ishwar ne meri baat rakh di. If God wills, man gets success. And the man feels that he is responsible for it.

As per reports, your next film with Nana Patekar and Utkarsh Sharma is titled Journey To Vanwaas. Is that true? The film’s title actually is Vanwaas: A Journey Of Life. The title Vanwaas is appropriate for the film. In the Ramayan, the father sent his son to vanwaas. Nowadays, it's vice versa. Har ghar mein vanwaas ho raha hai.

Vanwaas: A Journey Of Life is an emotional drama. Earlier, I made films like Shradhanjali (1981), Bandhan Kuchchey Dhaagon Ka (1983) and Apne (2007). This film is in that zone. A lot of people asked me, ‘Aap action film kyun nahin kar rahe hai?’. I used to tell them, ‘Main woh film kar raha hoon jo mujhe banani hai’. Vanwaas mein emotions ka gadar hai and I want to present it to the audience. It’s the most relevant story of today’s times, based on what’s happening to the old people in society. It has one of the finest performances of Nana Patekar. The scenes between Nana and Utkarsh are mind-blowing! Duniya dekhegi iss film mein ki performance ka level kya hota hai.

When will it be released? We plan to release it by the end of 2024. We’ll finalize the date in September.

Any update on Gadar 3? Work on Gadar 3 is going on. Jab mere paas emotion ka atom bomb aayega, tab main phodunga!

For Gadar 2, you said that you faced budget issues. That wouldn’t be the case for Gadar 3, right? Yes, iss baar accha budget milega!

What about Apne 2? It’s in the pipeline

What are your plans for Independence Day? I wish you and all the readers a happy Independence Day. A lot of revolutions and sacrifices took place for a better future. It’s important that people realize it and love their country. As for my plans, I’ll watch a good patriotic film, maybe one starring Manoj Kumar.
