Saif Ali Khan on the criticism and backlash surrounding Adipurush: “There are certain areas like religion that you need to stay away from”

Saif Ali Khan recently spoke candidly about the controversies that have surrounded his films, particularly the mythological drama Adipurush. Released in June 2023, starring Prabhas and Kriti Sanon, the film faced widespread criticism for its depiction of religious figures and cultural sensitivities.

In a recent conversation during the India Today Conclave 2024 in Mumbai, Khan reflected on the challenges posed by such controversies. He acknowledged the "unsettling" experience of facing legal action and public scrutiny. “There was a case and some kind of decision taken up by the court that said an actor is responsible for what he says on screen,” he noted. The actor added, “I know a lot of people are not free to say or do whatever they want. We all have to police ourselves slightly and be a bit careful; otherwise, there could be trouble.”

Khan emphasized the importance of exercising caution when dealing with sensitive subjects like religion. “There are certain areas like religion that you need to stay away from. We are not here to make trouble,” he said.

His comments echoed the controversies surrounding his earlier series, Tandav, which also faced backlash due to its portrayal of political figures. “I played a politician in a show (Tandav) which ran into a fair amount of trouble. So, you learn from the job. You need to be away from these areas,” he added.

On the work front, Saif Ali Khan’s latest film Devara: Part 1 has been released in theatres. The film stars Jr. NTR and Janhvi Kapoor.
