Dia Mirza opens up on potential Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein sequel: “we will not even attempt a sequel unless the story is strong”

When you think of Dia Mirza, her memorable portrayal of Reena Malhotra in Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (RHTDM) often stands out. Starring opposite R. Madhavan, Mirza shot to fame with her debut in this 2001 classic. Directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, RHTDM is celebrated for its unforgettable soundtrack, engaging narrative, and charming cast, establishing Mirza and Madhavan as one of Bollywood's most beloved on-screen couples. In August 2024, the film returned to theaters, enchanting fans and nostalgic cine-goers who enjoyed the chance to experience it on the big screen once again.

Reflecting on the film's impact, Dia Mirza expressed her amazement at the videos showing audience reactions in theaters. She recounted how her husband, Vaibhav Rekhi, insisted they go to watch the film together. During their visit, she experienced firsthand the audience singing along to the songs. Mirza remarked, “I was just sitting there and thinking that RHTDM is a gift that never stops giving. I don’t know what it is. Is it the music, the lyrics? Nostalgia is a very powerful feeling.” She also shared her hope that if a sequel were ever made, it would honor the deep love and appreciation the original film has garnered over the years.

The widespread positive response to RHTDM also prompted a heartfelt conversation between Dia Mirza and R. Madhavan. Mirza recounted, “Maddy called me and asked, ‘Are you seeing this?’ I was like, yeah, it’s insane.” They later hosted a live session together, which gained considerable attention and went viral.

When asked if this renewed affection for the film might lead to discussions about a sequel, Mirza thoughtfully replied, “Over the years, we have been discussing it. But we have also been very clear that we will not even attempt a sequel unless the story is strong.”
