Director Rahul Dholakia reveals Shah Rukh Khan shot action scenes in Raees despite painful knee injury: “His knee would swell up”

Although Raees, starring Shah Rukh Khan, didn't meet commercial expectations, Shah Rukh gave his all to the project. In a recent interview, director Rahul Dholakia revealed that Shah Rukh was dealing with a troublesome knee injury while filming the action scenes. Rahul expressed admiration for Shah Rukh's determination, noting how he persisted through multiple takes despite the injury.

Talking to Mashable India, Rahul said, “Shah Rukh had a knee problem. His knee would swell up. And we had to do action. Shah Rukh had a big knee problem and it was extremely painful. I was like, ‘How will you do this?’ He said ‘Chinta mat kar yaar, main kar lunga’ and the way he would land his foot. When we did retakes, I would tell the action director ‘let it be’, but Shah Rukh would say, ‘Don’t worry, I will do it yaar’.” Rahul stated that Shah Rukh could have easily postponed the shoot, but did not.

Rahul said Shah Rukh is a highly secure actor who supports people around him. He stated, “Shah Rukh makes you feel very comfortable. He is not an insecure actor. He is not an insecure human being also and he is encouraging. He is on your side.”

He shared that he originally didn’t want any songs in the film, but both Shah Rukh Khan and producer Ritesh Sidhwani disagreed. “I never liked songs in my film. Doesn’t make sense. In Raees also, I wrote in the screenplay that there should not be a song here. Ritesh and Shah Rukh looked at each other and said ‘Matlab?’ I said they should not be here. They said, ‘Your film won’t last a day’. I said, ‘Why? What do songs have to do with movies?’ They said, ‘You are new to this commercial film experience’,” he recounted.

Raees also featured Mahira Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
