Throwback: When Manisha Koirala was considered a jinx for Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and even Feroz Khan

Manisha Koirala is one of the most celebrated actresses of Hindi cinema and has amassed a huge fan following thanks to her acting talent, work ethic, stunning looks and charming smile. Sadly, there was a time when she was considered to be a jinx, especially for films starring Khans. This trivia was documented in Komal Nahta’s Film Information magazine dated August 7, 1999.

This was a time when Mann had released a month before this issue was out, on July 9. It co-starred Aamir Khan and underperformed at the box office. This fortified the ‘Manisha Koirala-Khan’ jinx. This is because her earlier film with Aamir Khan, Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995), had flopped.

With Salman Khan, she appeared in three films - Sangdil Sanam (1994), Yeh Majhdhaar (1996) and Khamoshi (1996). While the latter two were flops, Sangdil Sanam got the verdict of a Disaster.

As for Shah Rukh Khan, he and Manisha Koirala were seen in two films – Guddu (1995) and Dil Se (1998). The latter is memorable even today for its performances, treatment and of course the songs. But it was a niche film for those times and didn’t work in cinemas.

The article however doesn’t end here. It further noted that a ‘devil-mind’ brought to their notice that Manisha Koirala was a jinx for one more Khan – Feroz Khan. She was cast inYalgaar (1992), which was produced and directed by the suave actor. And sadly, it turned out to be an average grosser.

The article further went on to say that Manisha Koirala, along with Sanjay Dutt, launched the music of Prem Aggan (1998). It marked the debut of Feroz Khan’s son Fardeen Khan. The article in a way hinted that she was, in a way, responsible for the film’s debacle at the box office.

This story, however, didn’t mention that Manisha Koirala also was seen in Kachche Dhaage (1999). It starred another important Khan of the industry – Saif Ali Khan – though they were not paired opposite each other, and that the film was a decent commercial success.

On the film front, Manisha Koirala was recently seen in Heeramandi. As Mallikajaan, she rocked the show and the Netflix original amassed a huge viewership across the globe.

23 Years of Lagaan: “A famous painter heard 'O Paalanhaare' and told me, ‘Tum jhooth bolte ho. Ek atheist aisa bhajan nahin likh sakta’” - Javed Akhtar

One of the greatest films of all time, Lagaan (2001), completed 23 years on June 15. Starring Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh, it was a fictional period drama about a group of villagers learning cricket, a game alien to them, and playing it against the British. In the pre-climax, when the villagers fear defeat, they collectively pray to God. This is when 'O Paalanhaare' is played and it leaves viewers teary-eyed. The song took a life of its own and is one of the most loved film devotional songs of all time. Many are surprised to know that Javed Akhtar, an atheist, penned this track.
