'Aata Majhi Satakli' snub in Singham Again: Trade experts call it a missed opportunity for cinematic frenzy

The Diwali release Singham Again got a positive response but many missed the iconic ‘Aata majhi satakli’ dialogue. They feel that the dialogue, which is an indispensable part of the Singham franchise, should have been a part of the film.

Trade veteran Taran Adarsh sighed, “I so missed that dialogue and the incidents leading to that dialogue. That dialogue itself would have created a frenzy in cinemas. I don’t know why they never utilized it. I also missed the very fiery confrontational scenes. Even today, I see the dramatic scenes of Ajay Devgn and Prakash Raj from the first part.”

He gave an interesting instance, “Salman Khan has been using ‘Ek baar jo maine commitment kar di…’ from Wanted (2009) on various platforms. There are certain iconic lines that stay with you.”

He, however, also said, “Of course, there’s a display of star power like never before in Singham Again. It reminded how Rajkumar Kohli assembled 6-7 stars for the old Jaani Dushman (1979). It used to be fun just seeing so many talents in a poster. In today’s times, Rohit Shetty successfully achieved it. I told him, ‘Getting even 1 or 2 stars is difficult. But you have cast an army of them’! I just wish the writing could have been smarter, the music could have been better and ‘Aata Majhi Satakli’ was retained.”

Trade analyst Atul Mohan agreed, “When the identification of a character is missing, then the impact is affected. They could have played with some other word. He could have said ‘Ab meri hatt gayi hai’. The audience would have still liked it.”

Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, observed, “In Singham Again, Bajirao Singham was more Pan India, uber and sophisticated. The rustic Maharastrian-ness, which everyone loved, was missing.”

But film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi explained, “Every franchise has to reinvent. For instance, Dhoom’s first part belonged to a certain milieu and had a certain look and feel. Dhoom 3, which was a blockbuster, was a movie that a lot of people felt that it didn’t even seem to belong to the Dhoom franchise. But with the changing course of the requirements of the patrons and the mood of the audiences, franchises have to change. That’s what Mr Rohit Shetty attempted with Singham Again. It did well but not to the extent that all of us hoped for. Nevertheless, innovation as per the changing times is absolutely necessary and I am glad filmmakers are conscious of it.”
