Box Office: Mufasa: The Lion King ROARS ahead; sells double the tickets of Pushpa 2 on Christmas

The last big Hollywood release of the year, Mufasa: The Lion King, was released on December 20 and has performed well at the box office. The film held well on Monday, December 23, which made it clear that it’ll have a great run from hereon. The film was released in the beneficial Christmas period and the earnings will see a huge spike on Wednesday, December 25, on the day of the big festival. What has surprised trade and industry is that the shows of Mufasa: The Lion King are leading over that of the monstrous blockbuster, Pushpa 2.

As of 10:30 am on Tuesday, December 24, Mufasa: The Lion King has sold a total of 44,000 tickets in the national chains – 37,000 tickets in PVR Inox and 7,000 in Cinepolis. On the other hand, Pushpa 2 has sold 27,000 tickets – 21,000 in PVR Inox and the balance of 6,000 tickets in Cinepolis. One might argue that Pushpa 2 is in its third week and hence, there would be a difference. However, one must also remember that the Allu Arjun-starrer is unstoppable. On its third Sunday, it collected more than Rs. 20 crores. Taking these factors into account, it is praiseworthy that Mufasa: The Lion King has gone past the Pan-India movie.

Several reasons have helped Mufasa: The Lion King achieve such ticket sales on Christmas. It’s a film meant for families, who usually come out in full force on holidays. The voiceovers by Shah Rukh Khan in the Hindi version and Mahesh Babu in the Telugu version also enticed moviegoers. But more than that, word of mouth has been positive. Without the public support, the film wouldn’t have managed such a box office trend.

Mufasa: The Lion King will have a normal Thursday drop after which the collections will jump yet again over the second weekend. Next week, too, it’ll have an advantage on Tuesday, December 31, which is a holiday of sorts. Wednesday, January 1, is also a big holiday and there’s no competition on Friday, January 3. As a result, Mufasa: The Lion King can enjoy a good run until January 9. That should be more than enough for the film to cross the Rs. 100 crore mark.

23 Years of Lagaan: “A famous painter heard 'O Paalanhaare' and told me, ‘Tum jhooth bolte ho. Ek atheist aisa bhajan nahin likh sakta’” - Javed Akhtar

One of the greatest films of all time, Lagaan (2001), completed 23 years on June 15. Starring Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh, it was a fictional period drama about a group of villagers learning cricket, a game alien to them, and playing it against the British. In the pre-climax, when the villagers fear defeat, they collectively pray to God. This is when 'O Paalanhaare' is played and it leaves viewers teary-eyed. The song took a life of its own and is one of the most loved film devotional songs of all time. Many are surprised to know that Javed Akhtar, an atheist, penned this track. At a show ‘Main Koi Aisa Geet Gaaon’, the legendary songwriter opened up about this song and confessed that he got this surprising reaction often. He also revealed how he responds to such comments in his trademark humourous style. Javed Akhtar said, “A famous painter, Chanda, called me and said, ‘Javed, tum apne aap ko atheist kehte ho. Tum jhooth bolte ho. Ek atheist...
