EXCLUSIVE: Amit Trivedi talks about his UNFORGETTABLE NH7 Weekender experience: “A girl kept crying non-stop; I also got emotional”; reveals that he has been advised by 2-3 organizers not to sing Udta Punjab: “There must be a political reason and I don’t know much about it’”

Amit Trivedi will be singing live at the NH7 Weekender, which will be held on December 14 and 15, 2024 in Pune. The popular composer-singer has an incredible fan following not just due to his film songs but also the tracks he has released on his YouTube channel named AT Azaad. Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to Amit Trivedi about NH7 Weekender, his independent songs and a lot more.

Congratulations on Azaad Collab. How has the response been? The response has been amazing. Touchwood, I have been lucky to get more than 95% good comments and reactions on social media and also people personally telling me. So the reactions have been good.

You were honest enough to admit that “The label isn’t doing that great, nor is it doing too poorly.” What still drove you to come up with this album, knowing that the response hasn't probably been as per expectations?

The only thing I know in life is that I wake up in the morning to make music, and I go to sleep with that happiness. Happiness is the most important thing and creating music gives me happiness. I just want to create music and put it out. What happens after putting it out? That is not in my control, not in my hands. Whatever is in my hands, I do that and make sure I enjoy it.

The music videos are lovely. Since the album is all about Collab, did you ever think of getting actors on board for these music videos? If yes, which actors did you talk to? No, this was purely musicians and singers and if you carefully see, they are all the finest playback singers - Sunidhi Chauhan, Jubin Nautiyal, Armaan Malik, Neha Kakkar, Asees Kaur, Neeti Mohan, Javed Ali, Shahid Mallya, Nikita Gandhi, Varun Jain and many more. So, I thought that let me put them in the playfront rather than playback because they all are absolutely amazing. They not only sing well but they also perform well. Moreover, they have a great screen presence, far better than the actors. So, I didn’t need an actor.

‘Rangeeni’ is a lovely song. You mentioned that it was supposed to be used in a film initially. I am curious... which film was it? Sorry, I can’t mention that.

How much do you enjoy performing live? Can you please share the craziest or funniest experience during a live performance? I love being on stage. When an artist is in the studio and whatever he creates, the ultimate destination is live performance. When you actually meet the audience and your fans and interact with them face-to-face, it’s always the most amazing experience for any artist. I’m not different, I enjoy the feeling when the responses are great and the audience is enjoying it.

And about the experiences, there are so many crazy ones, but one of the recent ones was, I don’t know why, from the past few shows I’ve been told by the organisers not to perform ‘Udta Punjab’ for whatever reason. It has happened in two or three places where I was told not to perform the song. So, I said ‘Okay, fine, there must be a political reason and I don’t know much about it’, but then the moment I get on stage, the entire audience looks at me and the first thing they shout is ‘Udta Punjab’. Then, I am in two minds wondering what to do? The organizers tell me not to sing and the audience tells me to sing, so it’s crazy.

Share your best memory from the music festival NH7 Weekender.  The best memory from NH7 Weekender was when I performed for the first time, and after the performance, I saw a lot of people crying, and when I met them at the backstage, they were very emotional. There was one girl who kept crying non-stop throughout the show and after she met me, she broke down and looking at her I also started crying and got emotional. It was a beautiful moment and an experience of how my music has impacted people. That's always special and something I really cherish.

Which songs can we expect you to perform on? Obviously from my independent label AT Azaad, and a lot from the Azaad Collab album and, of course, the popular ones that people want to hear.

23 Years of Lagaan: “A famous painter heard 'O Paalanhaare' and told me, ‘Tum jhooth bolte ho. Ek atheist aisa bhajan nahin likh sakta’” - Javed Akhtar

One of the greatest films of all time, Lagaan (2001), completed 23 years on June 15. Starring Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh, it was a fictional period drama about a group of villagers learning cricket, a game alien to them, and playing it against the British. In the pre-climax, when the villagers fear defeat, they collectively pray to God. This is when 'O Paalanhaare' is played and it leaves viewers teary-eyed. The song took a life of its own and is one of the most loved film devotional songs of all time. Many are surprised to know that Javed Akhtar, an atheist, penned this track. At a show ‘Main Koi Aisa Geet Gaaon’, the legendary songwriter opened up about this song and confessed that he got this surprising reaction often. He also revealed how he responds to such comments in his trademark humourous style. Javed Akhtar said, “A famous painter, Chanda, called me and said, ‘Javed, tum apne aap ko atheist kehte ho. Tum jhooth bolte ho. Ek atheist...
