EXCLUSIVE: Kabir Khan criticizes Oscars obsession, calls it “American Award, not international”; Vikramaditya Motwane agrees!

Days before Laapataa Ladies, produced by Aamir Khan, was out of the Oscars 2025 race, prominent filmmakers Kabir Khan and Vikramaditya Motwane discussed India’s fascination with the American award show during the Bollywood Hungama Filmmakers Roundtable 2024.

Kabir Khan Criticizes Oscars Obsession Filmmaker Kabir Khan expressed his disapproval of the industry’s fixation on the Oscars. He remarked, “The problem is that we are too obsessed with the Oscars. It’s an American award show, not an international; why do we have to go through this debate? Cannes is an international award. Why are we looking for validation from there?”

He further argued that not being nominated for the Oscars should not lead to disappointment. “It’s one award for 150 countries. I don’t think anybody needs to be disappointed if you don’t get nominated. I just don’t like the approach,” Kabir said. Vikramaditya Motwane on the Oscars’ Economic Benefits Vikramaditya Motwane highlighted the tangible benefits of an Oscar nomination but acknowledged that the hype is often disproportionate. “What’s worse is the fact that there’s an ‘Oscars-nominated’ tag. Beyond the tag, there’s a genuine economic benefit that happens afterward,” he explained.

Motwane elaborated on how an Oscar nomination can elevate the stature of a country’s film industry globally. “When a country’s film is celebrated at the Oscars, it’s a benefit for the overall industry from an international perspective. But yeah, we overhype Oscars,” he concluded.

The conversation took place amidst the debate over Laapataa Ladies being India’s official Oscars entry. Many felt that All We Imagine As Light, a Cannes Film Festival winner, was a stronger contender.
