EXCLUSIVE: Mozez Singh looks back at launching Vicky Kaushal with Zubaan: “If I had not found him, I don’t know if I would have made the film”; also reveals, “Will Smith LOVED Zubaan”

Vicky Kaushal began his career as a full-fledged actor with Masaan (2015). Zubaan (2016) was his second release but it’s a film he had signed before Masaan. The musical entertainer was directed by Mozez Singh and thus, he’s the one who launched one of the most promising actors in our industry. Zubaan was released at a time when Vicky was not as popular as he is today and didn’t do well though the word of mouth was strong. Hence, can one expect Zubaan to be back in cinemas in this era of re-releases? Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke about this aspect with Mozez Singh during the promotions of his Netflix documentary, Yo Yo Honey Singh: Famous.

Mozez Singh replied, “I would love to see it being re-released. We (he and Sikhya Entertainment, which produced Zubaan as well as Yo Yo Honey Singh: Famous) even discussed it internally. However, we were all busy with Famous but hopefully, we’ll do it. I feel that more people should see that film.”

When asked how it feels to give such a big break to Vicky Kaushal, Mozez Singh replied, “I am so happy for him. Vicky will always be a very special part of my life. If I gave him his first break as a lead actor, he gave me my first break as a director. If I had not found him, I don’t know if I would have made the film. It went both ways. Hence, he’s special to me. I recently met him and we both talked about the incredibly pure experience it was to make Zubaan. We were all new and we all wanted to give it our best. It’s the kind of feeling that would never come back because your second or third film would never be your first film.”

Zubaan had a great festival run before its theatrical release. There were reports that Will Smith quite liked the movie when he saw it at Busan. Mozez Singh confirmed, “Zubaan has been the only Indian film to open the Busan International Film Festival. It was a huge honour for us. And yes, Will Smith did love the film (smiles).”

Apart from making movies, Mozez Singh also featured as an actor, in the much-loved Netflix series, Fabulous Lives Of Bollywood Wives. When prodded about it, Mozez Singh laughed and stated, “The producers asked me to be a part of the first season. I was like, ‘God, no way! What am I going to do on a reality show?’ Then I decided not to take myself so seriously. I’d like to thank the team at Dharmatic Entertainment for featuring me season after season. It’s a fun experience and it’s like a gift that has come my way.”

As for Neelam Kothari, Maheep Kapoor, Bhavna Pandey and Seema Sajdeh, he said, “I call them ‘awesome foursome’. They are all dear friends.”

Will Mozez Singh appear in Season 4 as well? He replied, “I don’t know. I think they are still celebrating the success of Season 3. I hope they’ll ask me to be a part of Season 4.”
