PM Narendra Modi praises Raj Kapoor on his 100th Birth Anniversary: “He left an indelible mark on Indian and global cinema”

Today marks the 100th birth anniversary of Raj Kapoor, India’s iconic "showman." Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the legendary filmmaker and actor on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting his lasting impact on Indian and global cinema. Modi praised Raj Kapoor’s timeless characters, which still resonate with audiences, and called him a true cultural ambassador, who showcased India’s rich heritage through his artistry.

Modi wrote, “Today, we mark the 100th birth anniversary of the legendary Raj Kapoor, a visionary filmmaker, actor and the eternal showman! His genius transcended generations, leaving an indelible mark on Indian and global cinema.”

The tribute highlighted Raj Kapoor’s significant influence on cinema and culture.

Last week, the Kapoor family, including Kareena Kapoor Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Karisma Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor, and others, visited Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence in New Delhi. They extended a special invitation to mark Raj Kapoor’s 100th birth anniversary. To honor the legendary filmmaker, the family is organizing nationwide screenings of his most iconic films.

The festival will showcase Raj Kapoor’s most acclaimed films, spanning nearly four decades. The line-up includes Aag (1948), Barsaat (1949), Awaara (1951), Shree 420 (1955), Jagte Raho (1956), Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai (1960), Sangam (1964), Mera Naam Joker (1970), Bobby (1973), and Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985).

Earlier, Ranbir Kapoor expressed his pride in being part of the Raj Kapoor family, stating, “Our generation stands on the shoulders of a giant whose films captured the essence of their era and gave a voice to the common man. His timeless stories remain an inspiration, and this festival is our tribute to his magic, inviting everyone to relive his legacy on the big screen. See you at the movies!”

As a special gesture to mark this milestone, movie tickets for the festival will be priced at just Rs. 100 across all participating cinemas.
