20 Years of Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo EXCLUSIVE: “At 5 am, Akshay Kumar used to go to a waterfall in Manali for a bath; I didn’t even realize when he removed my wallet from my pocket” - Kapil Kaustubh Sharma

Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo (2004) completed 20 years on December 24, 2024, and it marked the acting debut of director Anil Sharma’s brother Kapil Kaustubh Sharma. On the 20th anniversary of this wholesome entertainer, he spoke exclusively with Bollywood Hungama about his experience of working with his co-stars, namely Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Bobby Deol.

Kapil Kaustubh Sharma began by talking about Bobby Deol, “Working with Bobby was a lot of fun. He didn’t make me feel that he was my senior. He was chilled out and used to give tips on acting. He used to laugh at me sometimes since I used to be very tense on sets with regard to my lines and performance.”

Speaking of Akshay Kumar, he said, “I didn’t have any scenes with Akshay but I interacted with him briefly. I was very impressed by him. There was a waterfall opposite our Manali hotel. Every morning, at 5:00 am, he used to go there to take a bath! We used to be amazed. He used to reason, ‘Agar aap subah naha lo, toh din bhar tumhe thandi nahin lagegi’.”

Kapil Kaustubh Sharma continued, “His haath ki safai is seen to be believed. He’s like a magician. We were playing cards and I didn’t even realize when he removed my wallet from my pocket. He then asked me ‘Tera wallet kahan hai?’ and then he gave it to me in my hand. He was that sharp (laughs).”

Finally, he opened up about working with Amitabh Bachchan, “Sandali Sinha, the late Vivek Shauq and I were very nervous before Amit ji’s arrival. He was supposed to stay in Lalgarh Palace, Bikaner. 3-4 days before his arrival, more than a thousand people assembled to catch his glimpse. I didn’t think about it earlier and it was then that it hit us as we realized whom we were going to share screen space with.”

Kapil added, “I had two scenes with him – one where we have tea and the other where I take his blessings. We shot the tea scene first; we all stood in line to introduce ourselves. He understood hum sab ghabraaye hue hai! Anil ji coolly explained the scene and decided to go for a take. Sandali and I, meanwhile, were nervous. We feared we might not even be able to lift the tea cup properly! Amit ji understood and he insisted on a rehearsal. He told Anil ji, ‘Kya pata mere se scene barabar ho ya na ho’. He pointed at me and quipped, ‘Aap toh director ke family hai. Aap ko toh director daatenge nahin. Humein daant pad jaayegi’! We all started laughing. That’s how he broke the ice.”

Kapil Kaustubh Sharma also stated, “We did the rehearsal and then went for take. He fumbled while picking up the cup. I think he did it purposely to make us feel comfortable.”
