Satya re-release premiere: Ram Gopal Varma revealed that many advised him not to have songs: "Sandeep Chowta asked, 'Do you think if The Godfather had songs, would you have liked it?'. That SCARED me as it was pretty strong logic"

PVR INOX, Versova Homage Screening and Radio Nasha organized the screening of Satya (1998) on January 15, two days before its re-release in cinemas across the country. The event was memorable as it was graced by the film’s team – director Ram Gopal Varma, presenters Bharat Shah and Vinay Chowksey, music director Vishal Bhardwaj, writer Anurag Kashyap and actors Urmila Matondkar, Manoj Bajpayee, Chakravarthy, Aditya Srivastava and Makrand Deshpande. The team of the film went down memory lane like never before. They even opened up about the songs of the film, which are as memorable as the film.

Ram Gopal Varma revealed, “Originally, there were no songs. That’s when Bharat bhai Shah said, ‘Without songs, how would you promote the film?’. Those days, it was unheard of to have trailers without songs. A lot of people were disappointed when I made the decision to have songs. After all these years, I also can’t imagine Satya without the songs, be it ‘Kallu Mama’ or ‘Sapne Mein Milti Hai’.”

RGV then raised laughs as he said, “Sandeep Chowta was doing the background score. He said, ‘Ramu, we can’t have songs. It’ll screw up the film’. I explained to him the reason. He replied, ‘Do you think if The Godfather had songs, would you have liked it?’. That scared me as it was pretty strong logic (laughs)!”

As expected, the audience couldn’t stop laughing. Ram Gopal Varma continued, “However, I didn’t want to see the long face of Bharat bhai Shah. Hence, I told Sandeep Chowta, ‘Let’s take a chance’. This is how Vishal came into the picture.”

At another point, Vishal Bhardwaj called ‘Geela Geela Pani’ one of the best songs of his career. Urmila Matondkar revealed that she was shattered that this soulful track was majorly cut from the film and only one line of it was incorporated in the final version.
