Vedang Raina on the box office failure of Jigra, “It definitely broke me, I personally had so much faith in it”

Vedang Raina made his acting debut with Zoya Akhtar’s The Archies, which released on Netflix. Last year, he made his theatrical debut with Vasan Bala’s Jigra. Starring Alia Bhatt in the lead role, the young actor played her younger brother. In an interview with us, Vedang got talking about his career so far and the box office failure of Jigra.

You were hailed as the best newcomer of 2024. Do you feel the heat?

I never think of it this way. I definitely see the year as progress towards where I want to be. Still a very long way to go.

How did Jigra change the course of your career?

I’ll be honest, I didn’t really have any career plans when Jigra was being made. I only saw it as the best thing that could’ve happened to me at that point in my life, after The Archies, and I attempted to give it my best shot.

Did the failure of Jigra affect you?

When it didn’t perform to what was expected, it definitely broke me. It was something I personally had so much faith in. I felt for the whole team because I know everyone gave it their all. But this was an important lesson for me. Many positives to take from this experience.

Jigra director Vasan Bala has spoken of how you were physically hurt during the action scenes. Do you think you are more equipped for romantic roles?

No, not at all. I want to explore everything as an actor and I don’t categorise myself as anything specific. In fact, getting hurt doing certain action sequences is inevitable; in the heat of the moment, it just happens. It was my first time doing it, but I embraced it and I’m ready to do it again if given the opportunity.

How has the constant media attention affected your life?

It’s just a change. Every major change in your life takes some time adapting to, but then it just becomes routine. Just like joining a new school or starting a diet. I see this new public exposure as the same thing. I’m embracing it.

What are your plans for this year?

I have big dreams. I’m focused as ever. I want to push my boundaries with every new film. And yes, there’s a couple of films in conversation but I haven’t officially signed anything yet. Hopefully there’s an announcement soon.

23 Years of Lagaan: “A famous painter heard 'O Paalanhaare' and told me, ‘Tum jhooth bolte ho. Ek atheist aisa bhajan nahin likh sakta’” - Javed Akhtar

One of the greatest films of all time, Lagaan (2001), completed 23 years on June 15. Starring Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh, it was a fictional period drama about a group of villagers learning cricket, a game alien to them, and playing it against the British. In the pre-climax, when the villagers fear defeat, they collectively pray to God. This is when 'O Paalanhaare' is played and it leaves viewers teary-eyed. The song took a life of its own and is one of the most loved film devotional songs of all time. Many are surprised to know that Javed Akhtar, an atheist, penned this track.
