20th anniversary special: How Tamannaah Bhatia balanced biggies, bold choices and chartbusters to stay on top; all set to emerge as the actress with one of the LONGEST careers as leading actress in the HISTORY of Indian Cinema!

March 4 is a significant date for Tamannaah Bhatia. This is the day when her debut film Chand Sa Roshan Chehra was released in 2005. In other words, today is the 20th anniversary of this lesser-known film and also of Tamannaah as a film actress. What’s commendable is that her popularity has remained intact and that is thanks to her smart choices and being in sync with the times. Her talent and drop-dead gorgeous looks also contributed to her success.

Chand Sa Roshan Chehra didn’t work as intended but by then, she had moved South already. Having started with Telugu films, she soon ventured into Tamil cinema, and she tasted success in both these industries. The Pan-India movement was slowly picking up and hence, the Hindi-speaking audience had also noticed Tamannaah Bhatia. She came back to Hindi cinema with Himmatwala, Humshakals and Entertainment. Although these films flopped, they got her noticed. Her career got the biggest boost with Baahubali. This film took the idea of a Pan-India film to a different level. Her strong role and the song ‘Panchhi Bole’ made her a household name.

Since then, there has been no looking back. Her filmography makes it clear that she’s not just interested in doing mass-appealing films but also craves projects which she can lead majorly. When the web became big, she signed interesting web series and also web films. Her relationship with Vijay Varma kept her in the news but she has always been graceful about it, which has been appreciated. She broke her no-kissing rule as she progressed with the times. In an interview with Bombay Times in December 2023, she said, “I started off very young as an actor at 15, so I did certain things to ensure my parents were comfortable. Also, I catered to a certain kind of audience and wanted to stand by their sentiments. As I grew older, I realized I am an artiste and can’t restrict and limit myself. I couldn’t confine myself and expect something new to come my way.”

Simultaneously, she struck a balance by taking on big-ticket projects and delivering chartbuster songs, ensuring her star power remained intact. Interestingly, Tamannaah Bhatia made waves on Independence Day in both 2023 and 2024 with exciting film releases. Despite having brief roles in Jailer and Stree 2, she left a lasting impact with a hit song in each. Ultimately, her appearances in these movies contributed to the success big time. Jailer’s 'Kaavaalaa' created a storm while Stree 2’s 'Aaj Ki Raat' created an even bigger storm. The latter was one of the chief reasons why the film had immense pre-release hype.

As she completes 20 years, Tamannaah Bhatia is in an envious space. The older generation has been her big fans but she has also found resonance with the youth with her recent chartbusters and projects that appeal to them. By doing films in not just Tamil, Telugu and Hindi but even Malayalam cinema, she has thus managed to have admirers across the country.

It remains to be seen where she goes from here next. Looking at her track record, she is on the right track. If all goes well, she can beat Kareena Kapoor Khan, Saroja Devi etc., or be at par with them, and emerge as the actress with one of the longest careers as a leading actress in the history of Indian cinema!
