Amidst the release of Crazxy, here’s looking back at 11 other unique thrillers of the millennium

Sohum Shah’s Crazxy has just released and has proved to be an immersive experience within its crisp runtime of 93 minutes. On this ‘thrilling’ occasion, let us saunter down memory lane and pinpoint 11 unique thrillers we have seen in the millennium.

404—Error Not Found (2011 / Prawaal Raman)

The was a psychological thriller smartly intertwined with the horror genre, ultimately showing a rational explanation. Though a commercial non-starter, it sparkled with a solid script and some great performances from Imaad Shah and Nishikant Kamat.

A Wednesday! (2005 / Neeraj Pandey)

From the first decade of the millennium, this could well be called the thriller of the decade. Toplined by Anupam Kher and Naseeruddin Shah, its twist packed an incredibly whopping wallop and the film became a super-hit debut for Neeraj Pandey.

Andhadhun (2018 / Sriram Raghavan)

This is the alphabetical first of Sriram Raghavan’s trio of masterpieces in this elite list. We have heard of twists in a tale, but over here, there was a tale in the twists, complete with a rabbit-hunt with which the film opens! And what a tale it was. Tabu, Ayushmann Khurana and Radhika Apte were wonderful in this cerebrally classy caper.

Badlapur (2015 / Sriram Raghavan)

Our desi Hitchcock spun a tale that asked us how we should judge good and evil and moral and immoral. And to think that this masterpiece of a thriller’s story began only because the Pune cops towed away a Maruti 800 parked in a ‘No Parking’ zone! Skillfully adapted from ‘Death's Dark Abyss’, a novel by Massimo Carlotto, it saw Varun Dhawan being first recognized as a dependable actor, holding his own against Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

Being Cyrus (2006 / Homi Adajania)

This was a punchy thriller revolving around Parsis and of course greed. The major twists were plain awesome, and it essentially was about a family. Made in English, it was the debut of director Homi Adajania and also the man who has now made Chhaava—producer Dinesh Vijan. The powerhouse cast was led by Dimple Kapadia, along with Naseeruddin Shah, Saif Ali Khan, Boman Irani and Simone Singh.

Drishyam (2015 / Nishikant Kamat) and Drishyam 2 (2022 / Abhishek Pathak)

A man places supreme importance to the welfare of his family. The South Indian original was modestly successful in Hindi, but it actually got a cerebral sequel worked out that was also ‘Hindi-ized’ wonderfully. Part 1 seemed a brilliant story with closure. But in the second part, writer Jeethu Joseph re-opened the case and brought out a superlatively ingenious angle. And now we hear of a third film being written!

Jagga Jasoos (2017 / Anurag Basu)

The uniqueness of this film lay in two aspects: firstly, its backdrop against a real political event and secondly in being the only musical here, as the dialogues too were in song format! And this was because the hero is a lad who stammers and must sing to avoid the handicap. The film, according to keen students of cinema, will in time be considered a classic. Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif headed the cast, with the Pritam-Amitabh Bhattacharya team looking after the well-woven music.

Johnny Gaddaar (2007 / Sriram Raghavan)

A textbook on how to make a dark thriller, Johnny Gaddaar saw Neil Nitin Mukesh made a solid impact in his debut as a man with little scruples. Reworked essentially from a foreign film and yet dedicated to Vijay Anand and writer James Hadley Chase, this film is now regarded as a neo-classic though it did indifferent business then.

Kahaani (2012 / Sujoy Ghosh)

And who will not list this magnificent drama with the right dollop of emotion and that crackerjack twist? Vidya Balan as the pregnant woman searching for her missing husband was plain fabulous in this wonderful film that just ‘killed it’ in the suspense genre and had an unforgettably hair-raising climax.

Phobia (2016 / Pavan Kirpalani)

A talented artist develops agoraphobia (anxiety in a public place) after being molested by a cabbie. As a solution, her friend convinces her to stay in an empty apartment. But life gets more complicated as there are even more dangers and delusions in store. Radhika Apte was exceptional and considers this role to be one of her best.

Sajani Shinde Ka Viral Video (2023 / Mikhil Musale)

Dinesh Vijan romps in with three films here—after Badlapur and Being Cyrus, we have this small but terrific film in which a teacher (Radhika Madan), whose reputation has been needlessly sullied, disappears, complete with a suicide note. A dogged (!) investigation by a dog-loving female cop (Nimrat Kaur) comes up with a shocking revelation!

Table No. 21 (2013 / Aditya Datt)

Some of the films mentioned above have had a social relevance, and this one too did, though we had to watch this lovely thriller to know the vital message. A financially-down couple wins an all-inclusive lucky draw that takes them to Fiji Islands, where they are told to take part in a game show named ‘Table No. 21’. And soon, it becomes very clear that someone is playing a cruel game with them. Paresh Rawal, Rajeev Khandelwal and Tina Desai played key roles in this thriller with social overtones.

23 Years of Lagaan: “A famous painter heard 'O Paalanhaare' and told me, ‘Tum jhooth bolte ho. Ek atheist aisa bhajan nahin likh sakta’” - Javed Akhtar

One of the greatest films of all time, Lagaan (2001), completed 23 years on June 15. Starring Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh, it was a fictional period drama about a group of villagers learning cricket, a game alien to them, and playing it against the British. In the pre-climax, when the villagers fear defeat, they collectively pray to God. This is when 'O Paalanhaare' is played and it leaves viewers teary-eyed. The song took a life of its own and is one of the most loved film devotional songs of all time. Many are surprised to know that Javed Akhtar, an atheist, penned this track.
