Post-Chhaava’s BLOCKBUSTER success, is Vicky Kaushal the NEXT superstar? Trade experts share their views: “To deliver a Rs. 400-500 crore grosser is no mean feat; With this film, he can finally say, ‘Mera dukh khatam ho gaya’!”
Chhaava’s success gives a big boost to Vicky Kaushal’s star power as well. Many are already calling him the next superstar after Ranbir Kapoor. And the fact that he’s popular was evident even before Chhaava, noted trade veteran Taran Adarsh. He gave the example of Sam Bahadur (2023), which was not the usual mainstream film and yet collected Rs. 92.98 crores.
Taran Adarsh said, “Despite clashing with Animal, Sam Bahadur did so well at the box office. Hence, the acceptability has come in. Now, he needs a Pan-India reach to be a superstar. This film has given him that platform. He’s something else in Chhaava!”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan, in agreement, said, “Vicky Kaushal is a hard-working actor and has now got its due. After being there for so many years in the industry, you need that one big film (to take you to a different level). Chhaava fits the bill as a major part of its success goes to him. Also, to deliver a Rs. 400-500 crore grosser is no mean feat.”
Vicky Kaushal’s meme ‘Yeh dukh kaahe khatam nahin hota’ is legendary. Atul Mohan raised laughs as he joked, “With this film, he can finally say, ‘Mera dukh khatam ho gaya’!”
Girish Johar, however, said, “We can’t rank them as the next stars. We all know the kind of pull that Ranbir Kapoor has at the box office. At the same time, we also know Vicky Kaushal’s pull. His earlier film, Bad Newz (2024), did get the initial audience due to his dance in the song ‘Tauba Tauba’. But eventually, the film underperformed. Nevertheless, I’d definitely say that he’s an actor who is making his box office pull stronger with each and every film.”
Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia, Bihar, raised an important point, “I believe that Vicky Kaushal was in this zone when Uri – The Surgical Strike (2019) was released. But he did not really capitalize on it and let that opportunity go. He has that hero image and all the trappings of commercial stardom, be it machismo, aspirational quality etc. Chhaava chose him and now he has to be very careful of what he does next because that is what will make or break him. If he again goes back to doing the kind of cinema he did after Uri, he might again lose out on the fantastic opportunities. That might give people a chance to say that Chhaava worked for other reasons. The film has definitely worked because of him and he needs to be careful now.”
He continued, “He should do more universal cinema, which will connect to a larger audience. He should work with South Indian directors like A R Murugadoss, Lokesh Kanagaraj etc. and do a proper hardcore commercial fare. When he came to Patna, I told him, ‘Zameen se judiye. Aapki asal audience Patna mein hai. Patna ke liye picture banaiye. Mumbai apne aap chal jaayega’!”
Vishek also said, “In short, he should do commercially viable films targeted at the common man of this country. That’s where the connect between the younger generation stars and older generation stars is not happening. It’s easy to get the metro audience – by giving them good content. But it’s the small-town audience that the actors are not able to connect to. That’s where a film like Chhaava helps you – it helps you connect with them. Now, you have to capitalize on it.”
