A.R. Rahman opens up on working with Kamal Haasan in Thug Life; says, “I feel like from the screen he’s looking at me”

Music maestro A.R. Rahman opened up about his experience collaborating with two of Indian cinema’s iconic figures, Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam, at the grand launch of Thug Life’s debut single, ‘Jinguchaa’, in Chennai. Reflecting on the creative journey, Rahman spoke about the pressure and excitement of composing for Thug Life, especially with the legacy of their past collaboration on the classic Nayakan looming large.

Rahman perfectly captured the unique creative pressure of composing music for a legend like Kamal Haasan and said, “I don't know what to say. I think Kamal sir, his movie, he’s done everything and he’s looking and telling what are you going to do. Like that, every scene which I’m scoring, I feel like from the screen he’s looking at me what are you going to do.”

Rahman also paid tribute to the cinematic legacy of Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan’s earlier collaboration, saying, “And Mani sir and Kamal ji have created Nayakan, which is sort of the most iconic movie, reinventing cinema in a way with Mr. Ilaiyaraaja, and they’ve done amazing work.”

While acknowledging inevitable comparisons to Nayakan, Rahman clarified that Thug Life stands apart. “And this movie is not Nayakan, it is different from Nayakan, and so I didn’t have that weight on me. It’s got a very forward-thinking, more of a today’s sound, but still has that magic of what they did together, I think, in portions.”

Despite being immersed in the scoring process for months, Rahman’s excitement is still evident. “So I’m really honoured and I’m very excited. I’m still scoring for the past four months, every day I’ll be doing something, sending it to Mani sir and saying is it good or not.”

Rahman wrapped up his remarks by wishing the team well: “And Trisha, Abhirami, Simbu, and the whole team Ravi, Rajayant, HMV, Sarika maa, everybody, good luck, thank you. Ella pugazhum iraivanukke [All glory to God].”
