Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor criticizes Bollywood’s current state, calls for investment in high-concept films: “It’s 2025 and the films that get green-lit are films that belong in the 1980s”

Actor Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor, son of veteran actor Anil Kapoor, recently voiced his concerns about the state of Bollywood. Reacting to a social media post that declared, ‘Bollywood is finished,’ Harsh Varrdhan stated that the industry must move away from formulaic films and excessive focus on established stars. Instead, he urged producers to invest in low-cost, high-concept films that prioritize innovative storytelling.

Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor on the Need for Change in Bollywood Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Harsh Varrdhan responded to a post lamenting the decline of Bollywood and the lack of active big stars. He emphasized that Bollywood’s survival should not be dependent solely on longstanding superstars but should instead focus on fresh, original narratives.

“Bollywood isn’t and shouldn’t be only about stars that have been there and done that and formulaic films,” he wrote. “It’s time for producers and financiers to gamble on low-cost, high-concept films for cinemas without the usual tropes. Prioritize never-before-seen storytelling and keep the upfront costs low, and the audience will come.” The Success of ‘Thar’ as an Example Harsh Varrdhan cited the example of Thar (2022), a film he co-produced with Anil Kapoor, which had a budget of Rs 20 crore. Despite its moderate budget, the film was visually more striking than many Bollywood productions with two to three times its budget. He credited this to strategic spending, where every penny was utilized for filmmaking rather than unnecessary costs.

Harsh Varrdhan highlighted the difficulties of creating unconventional films in Bollywood, pointing out how projects like Bhavesh Joshi Superhero and Thar took years to materialize. He revealed that he has been working tirelessly since Bhavesh Joshi Superhero to bring his next film to life.

“I have been working tirelessly since the day that released to make my next, and I’ve also taken the responsibility to produce, co-create, and act—not just wait,” he shared. A Call for Industry Support When an X user suggested that ‘superstar kids’ should collaborate with new directors and take risks on bold projects, Harsh Varrdhan defended his choices. He pointed to his work with director Raj Singh Chaudhary on Thar, which was backed despite the director’s lack of prior recognition.

He also expressed his passion for filmmaking and the industry’s need to back creative, offbeat projects. “Bro, I don’t have endless money, but I do have endless passion and ideas. Filmmaking is a huge undertaking and process, but if I’m backed, I promise I’ll give you unforgettable films,” he added.
