Trade experts predict that Housefull 5 has the potential to be the BIGGEST opener of Akshay Kumar; the holiday period, comedy king Akshay Kumar’s solid timing will prove to be an advantage

The trailer of the much-awaited film Housefull 5 has finally been released and it has enhanced the buzz for the film. Looking at the response, many feel that it can emerge as the biggest opener of Akshay Kumar, beating the first-day earnings of Gold (2018; Rs. 25.25 crores) and Mission Mangal (2019; Rs. 29.16 crores). In short, Housefull 5 can be Akshay Kumar’s first Rs. 30 crores plus opener.

Trade veteran Taran Adarsh has kept his fingers crossed. He said, “I hope so and I hope it lives up to the expectations of the industry when it opens with a bang. The industry needs those big numbers.”

Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia, Bihar, predicted an opening of Rs. 25-30 crores but also said that it can go beyond this range. He explained, “For some reason, our industry doesn’t release biggies during IPL. What they don’t realize is that very few people overall watch IPL matches. Barring the final and semi-final, it doesn’t really affect the film business much. Also, the period from May 15 to end-June is the most lucrative period to release a film. There’s a holiday mood in the population. Schools and colleges are shut. Even if some institutions reopen, there’s no pressure of exams. The farmers have sold their crops. There’s a flow of money and people have disposable income. Due to these factors, Housefull 5 is going to take a phenomenal start at the box office. I’ll be very shocked if the film doesn’t do a business of Rs. 200-250 crores.”

He added, “If you look at the history of films released in the first week of June or the last days of May, it has delivered organic blockbusters. I remember Akshay Kumar scoring huge with Rowdy Rathore (2012). Ranbir Kapoor’s Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013) also outperformed.”

Vishek Chauhan also reminded, “Moreover, Housefull is a very powerful franchise. The last film, Housefull 4 (2019), did nearly Rs. 200 crores. Hence, the series is sitting on a Rs. 200 crores base. It’ll open strongly in single screens as well as multiplexes.”

He also said the murder comedy angle will go in favour of Housefull 5. “The problem with Housefull 2 (2012) and Housefull 3 (2016) were that they looked too similar. Housefull 4 (2019) stood out due to the song ‘Bala’ and reincarnation angle. This one also stands out and it has registered with the audience. It has everything going in its favour – holiday period, fantastic trailer, super songs, great star cast, franchise value,” he said.

Trade analyst Atul Mohan, meanwhile, exulted, “As of now, it seems like an opening of Rs. 15-20 crores. It all depends on what happens now and the kind of hype that the makers are able to build. Most of the punches are already from past films like ‘Teri girlfriend, meri girlfriend’, 3 guys by the name of Jolly, etc. Nevertheless, it’s a feel-good comic caper and it's what the audience is craving for nowadays.”

Many feel that Akshay Kumar’s comic timing is unbeatable and this can also attract moviegoers in hordes. Taran Adarsh said, “Akshay Kumar has got a sense of timing as far as comedy is concerned. He has dabbled in serious films off late like Kesari Chapter 2, Sarfira, etc. But now to see him back in the comedy zone, reminiscent of Garam Masala, Awara Paagal Deewana, Hera Pheri, Welcome, etc. will be a lot of fun.”

When asked if Housefull 5 will be Akshay Kumar’s biggest opener, distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal said, “I have my reservations.”
