Kajol reveals her kids don’t like watching her cry in films: “You should do films like papa does. Do Golmaal”

Kajol, a leading Bollywood star for over three decades, is set to explore new territory with her upcoming film Maa, marking her debut in the horror genre. Despite a long and varied career, the project offers her a fresh experience. Ahead of the film’s release, Kajol spoke with Hindustan Times about Maa, as well as her approach to parenting and other personal insights.

Speaking about how she got involved with Maa, she explained, “Maa came to me as a concept note, and I loved it because I am quite a mythology buff. Our country has such wonderful and fabulous stories and one of my favourites is Maa Kali and Raktabeej’s story.”

The film’s trailer highlights its grand scale and intense horror elements. Cantered on a mother protecting her daughter from evil, it includes a disturbing scene where Kajol’s character is tortured, with her bones being broken. Reflecting on that moment, Kajol says, “I wasn’t too disturbed by it, probably because I was the one performing it.” However, she quickly added, “But everyone around me reacted the same way (makes a disgusted face). They said, ‘I can’t watch you like this.’ But that’s the essence of horror, and that’s what makes it especially impactful.”

Kajol shares that her children—Yug (14) and Nysa (22)—have seen the trailer, and she hopes to convince them to watch the full movie. “Nysa probably won’t,” Kajol admits with her signature laugh, “she’s like me and isn’t a fan of horror.”

When asked if her kids have started forming opinions about her work now that they’re older, Kajol quickly responds, “Oh, they have always had opinions. Fortunately, or unfortunately, that opinion has not changed. They are very clear about it: 'We can't watch you crying on screen; you should do films like papa does. Do Golmaal!' They want me to do films that only make them laugh, and there is nobody crying, no glycerine is used, and nothing happens to me. I wonder what is this film where nothing happens to me, and I have to do nothing. Why am I in this film?”

Maa is the second recent film in which Kajol’s role centres around motherhood. Her previous film, Helicopter Eela, featured her as a controlling, overprotective parent. Kajol reflects, “I used to be like Eela, but not anymore; I’ve become much calmer and more relaxed. Kids grow up and develop their own thoughts and opinions—touchwood, that they do.”

Maa, directed by Vishal Furia, also features Ronit Roy and Indraneil Sengupta in key roles. The film is set to hit theatres on June 27.
