Aamir Khan to lead flag hoisting ceremony at Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2025

Renowned actor and filmmaker Aamir Khan will hoist the Indian national flag at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2025, during the festival’s Independence Day celebrations this August. The annual flag hoisting has become one of IFFM’s most significant traditions, bringing together the Indian diaspora and international film community to honour India’s cultural and national identity.

The ceremony is part of IFFM’s ongoing efforts to celebrate Indian cinema and its global impact. Backed by the Government of Victoria, IFFM is recognised as the largest Indian film festival held outside of India. With its growing reputation, the event continues to host prominent Indian artists and showcase films from diverse languages and regions.

This year, Aamir Khan’s participation in the ceremonial flag hoisting adds symbolic weight to the event. Known for his body of work that spans across mainstream and socially conscious cinema, Khan’s presence aligns with IFFM’s focus on inclusive storytelling and cultural representation.

Festival Director Mitu Bhowmick Lange shared the emotional significance behind the ceremony, “The flag hoisting ceremony at IFFM is more than just a formal tradition it’s a deeply emotional and unifying experience. Seeing the Tiranga unfurl on foreign soil, surrounded by artists, filmmakers, and members of the Indian and Australian communities, fills our hearts with pride. Having Aamir Khan, whose voice vision and cinema has had a profound impact on generations of film lovers not just in India but globally, lead this moment is truly a rare honour. His presence represents the strength and integrity of Indian storytelling and the values we stand for at IFFM, equality and unity in diversity. We look forward to welcoming audiences from all walks of life to witness this inspiring moment.”

IFFM 2025 will feature over 75 films in 31 languages and a series of panels, masterclasses, and cultural showcases. The festival aims to continue its tradition of fostering connections between filmmakers, audiences, and cultures through the shared language of cinema.
