Amaal Mallik reveals painful break-up over religion and choice of profession; says, “We were in a relationship from 2014 to 2019”

Amaal Mallik has openly spoken about his personal life and the challenges he’s faced, especially after revealing his decision to distance himself from his family. The singer shared that he was emotionally affected by his parents frequently comparing him to his brother, Armaan Mallik, and admitted to having several unresolved issues with them. Additionally, he experienced emotional turmoil following a breakup. He disclosed that his ex-partner ended the relationship because of his "Muslim identity" and his association with the film industry.

In a conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Amaal opened up about what went wrong, saying, “This is the first time that I am talking about my relationship in the open. But I think now it’s time.” He revealed that it all unfolded around the time he was working on Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Hindi film debut, Kabir Singh. “Working on Kabir Singh was the biggest heartbreak for me. It was because I was going through a very difficult phase emotionally. The girl I was in a relationship with then married someone else.”

Amaal further spoke about his past relationship, sharing, “We were in a relationship from 2014 to 2019. But her parents were against my religion and career. They didn’t want to associate their daughter with anyone from this industry. I was about to perform a gig when she called me and said she was getting married, but she would elope if I came to her. But I guess the SRK (Shah Rukh Khan) from DDLJ (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge) in me woke up and said, ‘No, if your parents can’t accept my religion and respect my career, then I wish you the best.’”

Amaal spoke about how the breakup deeply affected him, saying it left him completely shattered. “People have this understanding that I am a Muslim. But the truth is that I have a Muslim father. Whereas my mom is a Saraswat Brahmin Hindu. I go to Mt Mary's in Bandra when feeling empty. We are spiritual. We believe in God, but we don’t fear God. There is no ‘kattar’ anything. In my relationship, their problem was more with the industry than our religion. They were Jaats. They were like, ‘You are from an Islamic background’. I was like, ‘There is not even I of Islam in me’. I don’t follow the religion to the T. I am the least religious guy. I believe in Karma. We neutrally respect every religion,” he quipped.

Amaal also revealed that during the emotionally challenging period following his breakup, he felt let down by the industry as well. He shared, “It was through that pain that I created music for Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Kabir Singh. Within 20 minutes, we finalised 6 songs. But due to heavy politics against me, I was just reduced to one song. That too because Sandeep fought for me. Not that betrayals don’t happen anymore in this industry, but back then it took a heavy toll on me because I was also going through a bad break-up.”
