EXCLUSIVE: Saiyaara actor Shaad Randhawa talks about his bond with Mohit Suri, Milap Zaveri; makes it clear that he doesn't land roles in their films due to friendship: "I auditioned for Half Girlfriend and I did not get the part; Vikrant Massey got the part and rightfully so…"

Shaad Randhawa and Mohit Suri have a deep friendship and had earlier worked in six films together - Woh Lamhe (2006), Awarapan (2007), Aashiqui 2 (2013), Ek Villain (2014), Malang (2020) and Ek Villain Returns (2022). This makes Saiyaara their seventh film together. Shaad has been immensely praised for this role and moreover, he has also become a social media sensation. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Shaad spoke about this aspect and shed more light on his bond with Mohit.

Shaad Randhawa said, “I have been lucky that Mohit always made me a part of the creative process, be it while he’s writing the story or making his songs. In other words, I have been one of those fortunate people to have a front row seat to all his creative processes (smiles). When the script is locked, he tells me, ‘You should play this character’. But it’s not like he casts me because of our friendship. For Aashiqui 2, he suggested my name. Mukesh Chhabra was the casting director. I went for workshops and that’s how I got the part. The same happened in Ek Villain. During Saiyaara, he noticed my body transformation and suggested my name to YRF casting director Shanoo Sharma. There were workshops done after which I was selected.”

Shaad revealed, “In Half Girlfriend (2017), I went through the audition process and I did not get the part; Vikrant Massey got the part and rightfully so because he suited that part better. Hence, I want people to know that yes, we have a great bond and there’s a deep friendship. But it’s also very creative. Mohit Suri is a very professional director. So, he won’t do anything to jeopardize his film, even if it’s a matter of two shots. Hence, I feel fortunate that he believes in me as an actor and I try to live up to that belief.”

A look at Shaad Randhawa’s filmography makes one realize that most of his films did well or have strong recall value. When asked about the secret behind this golden touch, humble Shaad Randhawa replied, “I have been fortunate enough that these parts have come to me. Whether it was my roles in Mohit Suri’s films or Sanjay Gupta sir’s Mumbai Saga (2021) or Milap Zaveri’s Marjaavaan (2019), they were all appreciated. The songs of Marjaavaan and Mohit’s films were quite loved. As an actor, you creatively want to do what you are excited about and whatever comes instinctively. There’s no thought process behind it. It’s all feel and heart (smiles). There’s no strategy.”

Milap Zaveri is another person with whom Shaad Randhawa has formed a deep bond. Interestingly, he is a part of the director’s next, Ek Deewane ki Deewaniyat. It is expected to be in the same zone as Saiyaara and hence, the hype for it is significant.

When asked what one can expect from him in Ek Deewane ki Deewaniyat, Shaad Randhawa replied, “It’s a very pivotal role and as the title suggests, it’s an intense love story between Harshvardhan Rane and Sonam Bajwa. This film also has great music.”

How is the bond with Milap Zaveri? Shaad Randhawa replied, “He has also been a friend of mine for ages. But again, directors like Milap or Mohit are very professional and fierce. They have been in the industry for years. The whole industry is full of their friends. It doesn’t mean that they’ll keep casting everybody! They cast me because they believe in me as an actor. I am grateful to Milap for showing that kind of faith in me. My job as an actor is to repay that faith to my directors. I even did a brief part in Hansal Mehta’s show, Scam 2003 (2023). I have ensured that I delivered my best and that’s what I’ll continue doing.”

Milap is also gearing up for a mass entertainer, Tera Yaar Hoon Main, which also features Shaad Randhawa in an important role. It stars Akanksha Sharma and marks the debut of Aman Indra Kumar.
