Kalki Koechlin opens up on getting pregnant 'out of wedlock': "When I got pregnant and wasn't married, it was such a big deal!"

When Kalki Koechlin announced her pregnancy in 2020, she was in a long-term relationship with Israeli musician Guy Hershberg, though they weren’t married at the time. Now married and raising their daughter Sappho in Goa, Kalki recently reflected on that period, sharing that she often heard the term “out of wedlock” used in response to her pregnancy.

Speaking to Zoom, Kalki recalled the reactions to her pregnancy before marriage, saying, “It’s one of those things which I know isn’t a big deal. But for a lot of people, it is. When I got pregnant and wasn’t married, it was such a big deal! They were like, ‘how did you get pregnant out of wedlock!’ It’s a term used in the 18th century! What are you, in a Shakespeare play? I don’t understand it.” She added that she was living with Guy at the time and was surprised by how people responded to the news.

Kalki further addressed the societal reactions and said, “Yeah, I was living with my partner. We were together, we’d been together for years. We had a baby, it’s normal. That’s what happens. We do sleep together, by the way (laughs). We are living together, so it happens. I feel, we’re living these lies in society sometimes where we pretend these things don’t happen. We have a huge population, right? So these things do happen.”

In the same conversation, Kalki admitted to feeling some pressure to marry but said it never deeply affected her. She was previously married to director Anurag Kashyap, with whom she parted ways in 2015 after four years of marriage. Reflecting on societal and familial expectations, she said, “You feel that little bit of pressure from family when I was younger — get married! I don’t know, did I ever feel it strongly though? Not really.”

Kalki Koechlin most recently appeared in the Tamil romantic action thriller Nesippaya, directed by Vishnuvardhan and featuring Akash Murali and Aditi Shankar. Her upcoming project is the English-language film Emma and Angel, further expanding her diverse body of work.
