Rajkummar Rao on his evolving journey, "I still get nervous before every release"

What made you venture into action in Maalik when you are the king of comedy? Because I think it's very wild and exciting to move out of one’s comfort zone. After being the undisputed king of the action genre, why did Bachchan Saab do Chupke Chupke and Alaap? It's pretty awesome.

Lately, not too many films are doing well. Does that worry you? No, I'm not worried if films are not doing well. Because films are doing well also—it's not like nothing is working. As long as you make the right film and it reaches the right people, it will find its audience. Of course, every film has its own destiny, and I believe in that. The only thing in my control is to give my 200% to all my characters and films—which I do. The rest is totally the film's destiny. Sometimes, it happens that a lot of really good films don't work. And sometimes, very average films work.

True. So, no insecurities about the box office? None. You never know. There's no guarantee for that. The only thing which is in my control is to be very sincere towards my work—which I always try and do. But I think eventually, films will find their audience. Maybe today, tomorrow, or later—but a good film will certainly get its due. The story and the performances will always resonate with the audience. And I think, especially today’s audience—they're very sharp, very smart. If they like something, they always talk about it. And word-of-mouth really helps.

Comedy is not an easy genre. How do you swing it time after time? You’re absolutely right—comedy is not an easy genre. It’s a very tough genre. But I love it. I think I sort of exploded during Bareilly Ki Barfi, where for the first time people saw me doing comedy. And I really enjoyed the process.

Yes, but it isn’t only about you getting it right, right? I think it depends a lot on the writing. The writing has to be there. The situations have to be there. Only then an actor can come and maybe take it to some other level. But without good writing in comedy, it might look very forced.

That way, you’ve been lucky? Yes, I’ve been very lucky that I’ve been part of some really well-written scripts, which are funny—genuinely funny. But I think once you have everything in your favour—the writing, the right script, the right co-actors—and you’re having fun on set, which I think is very important, especially in a comedy film, that really translates on screen.

Lately, you’ve been successful in every genre. Would you say this is your golden phase? I still get nervous before the release of my films. But yes, I feel really grateful. I’ve been lucky to get roles that are so different from one another, and the audience has been very kind. I’m just trying to stay relevant and keep doing honest work.

You’re going to be a father soon. Is that exciting? Very, very exciting. My wife Patralekhaa and I can’t wait.
