EXCLUSIVE: Vijay Ganguly shares ASTONISHING trivia: "Taare Zameen Par's song 'Bum Bum Bole' was supposed to be a 3-day shoot but filming took 11 days…working with Aamir Khan is like going back to school"

Choreographer Vijay Ganguly spoke exclusively with Bollywood Hungama about choreographing the songs of Saiyaara. We then asked him about his other recent popular work, Sitaare Zameen Par. Vijay revealed an interesting information that he had worked with Aamir Khan 18 years ago in Taare Zameen Par. Interestingly, Sitaare Zameen Par is the spiritual sequel to the classic 2007 film.

Vijay Ganguly began by saying, “Many people don’t know that I had earlier worked on Taare Zameen Par. I was assisting Shiamak Davar at that time. The song ‘Bum Bum Bole’ was scheduled for a three-day shoot. On the first day, Aamir said, ‘Aaj hum shoot nahin karenge. Aaj hum blocking karenge’. Shiamak had only dates for 3 days. So, we shot for 1 ½ days after which Shiamak left due to prior commitments. Then, I was there and we shot that song for 11 days! This is because Aamir was directing it and he took care of all the details. Also, since we were shooting with kids, it was not easy and took time. I got a chance to spend 8 days with Aamir sir. That was a game-changer for me. That’s when I realized, ‘This is how films are made. This is how we have to take care of minor details and expressions’. That’s what intrigued me and was a big reason why I got into films.”

Explaining how he came on board Sitaare Zameen Par, Vijay Ganguly revealed, “Aamir saw my work and how much I contributed to ‘Bum Bum Bole’. When I became an independent, he called me for one of his films which hasn't been released yet. It will be out soon and features Aamir in a song. He was very happy with the outcome. This is also the time when Sitaare Zameen Par was being made and its director R S Prasanna reached out to me. He told me, ‘I like how you have been versatile. You don’t have a style’. Often, choreographers are slotted – some are known for glamorous songs, while some are known for songs with montages. But Prasanna saw that I had done a variety of work and he also knew that I had worked with Aamir sir before. Hence, he asked me to be a part of Sitaare Zameen Par.”

Vijay continued, “Prasanna had no idea that I had been teaching dance to special kids for almost 11 years (smiles). Rishi Shahani, who plays Sharma ji, was my student for 10 years. On the first day, I walked onto the set to meet the kids. As soon as Rishi saw me, he ran and jumped on me! It was like a reunion after a decade.”

Vijay Ganguly explained why working on Sitaare Zameen Par was unforgettable, “Working with Aamir sir is like an institution; it’s like going back to school. And these kids were so lovely. In front of them, you can’t be anything but genuine. If you pretend like ‘Main kitna khush hoon aur mujhe stress nahin hai’, it won’t work as they’ll see through you and won’t perform for you. Once you are on the set, you need to leave all the stress outside. They are like ‘Ab hum masti karenge aur masti karte-karte shoot karenge’. Once you do so, they match with the vibe and they’ll deliver.”
