Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa starrer Homebound closes Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2025 with standing ovation

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2025 concluded on a high note with the official screening of Homebound, directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan. Produced by Dharma Productions, the film features Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor in lead roles and was chosen as the festival’s Closing Night film.

Recently, it was being said that the screening of the film drew a packed house, with two back-to-back shows arranged due to overwhelming demand from the Australian audience. It has been learnt that the emotional narrative and strong performances resonated deeply with viewers, who responded with a standing ovation as the credits rolled.

Adding to its reception, Homebound went on to secure two major honours at the festival’s awards ceremony—Best Film and Best Director.

Expressing his gratitude, director Neeraj Ghaywan said, “To bring Homebound to Melbourne, and to win these two awards is extremely special. To be in a room full of such diverse people feels truly incredible. One feels so special to see the Australian government and ministers doing so much for this festival, I have never seen such kind of support anywhere else in the world.”

Festival Director Mitu Bhowmik Lange reflected on the choice of Homebound as the festival’s closing film, stating, “We could not have imagined a more powerful and fitting way to close IFFM 2025 than with Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound. The film embodies everything we celebrate at this festival—fearless storytelling, stellar performances, and narratives that are both deeply personal and universally relatable. Watching the audience rise to their feet in applause was a moment of pride not just for the team of Homebound, but for Indian cinema as a whole.”

The film’s screening marked the finale of yet another successful edition of IFFM, which continues to be one of the most significant international platforms for Indian cinema. With Homebound closing the festival, this year’s event reinforced the power of Indian stories to connect with audiences across cultures.
