15 Years of We Are Family EXCLUSIVE: "John Abraham was in consideration" - Siddharth P Malhotra explains how Arjun Rampal landed the role of father-of-two-children

The emotional family entertainer, We Are Family (2010), starring Kajol, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Arjun Rampal, completed 15 years on September 2. On this occasion, its director Siddharth P Malhotra spoke exclusively with Bollywood Hungama about its casting, box office and a lot more. As per the trivia on IMDb, John Abraham was the original choice for the role played by Arjun and we asked Siddharth about it.

Siddharth P Malhotra confessed, “John was in consideration. Before we could approach him, producer Karan Johar suggested that we should have Arjun on board. I guess he had become a star by then and it was the role of a father of two kids. So, we opted for Arjun.”

Siddharth P Malhotra revealed that though the film didn’t perform as expected, it continues to receive a lot of love, “The parents of my children’s friends tell me, ‘We saw We Are Family and we love it so much. What songs the film has’. And I feel like telling them, ‘Saale tum log kahan the jab film release hui thi? Now, you all have made my film a cult’ (laughs)!”

Meanwhile, Siddharth P Malhotra is gearing up for the release of Kamal Aur Meena, the biopic of Kamal Amrohi and Meena Kumari. When asked about this casting, he replied, “We’ll announce the cast very soon. The script is complete and we have started approaching actors and narrating the script to them.”

He added, “It’ll be shooting next year as we’ll need 6 months of prep. We need to put up sets depicting the era between 1952 and 1972. You can’t depict this era in the real locations except in Amroha, the residence of Kamal saab’s house. It's 100 years old. We can shoot there. Besides Amroha, everything that existed in Mumbai is no longer there. It’s a grand film and requires a lot of meticulous planning in terms of costumes, sets etc.”

Siddharth P Malhotra signed off by stating, “It has one of the finest scripts and hopefully, we’ll be able to have a dream cast.”
