Web Series Review: Do You Wanna Partner - Tamannah Bhatia, Diana Penty shine in a breezy yet flawed drama

Star Cast: Tamannah Bhatia, Diana Penty

Director: Archit Kumar, Collin D'Cunha

Synopsis: DO YOU WANNA PARTNER is the story of two ambitious women. Shikha Roy Chowdhury (Tamannah Bhatia) and Anahita Makujina (Diana Penty) are best friends, originally from Kolkata, who have now settled in Delhi-NCR. Shikha works at an alcoholic beverage company and is laid off after the company is acquired by Vikram Walia (Neeraj Kabi) of Silver Tusk. This is the second time that Vikram has devastated her. In her childhood, he had cheated her father, Sunjoy Roy Chowdhury (Indraneil Sengupta), leading to disastrous consequences for Shikha and her mother Radha (Ayesha Raza). Sunjoy had created a craft beer and named it Gondogol. Shikha decides to revive the brand. She asks Anahita to help her. Anahita has just been shortchanged at her job. Hence, she resigns and joins Shikha in creating a craft beer like never before. In no time, the eccentric Bobby Bagga (Nakuul Mehta) comes on board as the brewmaster. However, the challenges faced by Shikha and Anahita include sexism and the inability to raise finances for their venture. Meanwhile, Vikram Walia is also keeping a close eye on their endaevour. At this point, the mysterious Dylan aka David Jones (Jaaved Jaaferi) and the menacing Laila Singh (Shweta Tiwari) arrive in their lives, further adding to the chaos and madness. What happens next forms the rest of the show.

Do You Wanna Partner Story Review: Nandini Gupta, Arsh Vora and Mithun Gangopadhyay's story is fresh and has scope for drama and entertainment. Nandini Gupta, Arsh Vora and Mithun Gangopadhyay's screenplay (additional screenplay by Nidhi Sethia) is breezy. The writers have peppered the writing with several funny and relatable moments. But the writing also suffers in several places. Nidhi Sethia's dialogues add to the entertainment.

Archit Kumar and Collin D'Cunha's direction is decent and does justice, to an extent, to the plot. We have seen films and series based on characters opening up a new business. But no one has ever made anything on protagonists attempting to start a beer venture. This adds to the novelty value. On top of it, the founders of the start-up are women. That further gives an interesting touch. Many women will relate to the challenges faced by Shikha and Anahita. David Jones brings his own madness. A few scenes that stand out are David meeting Laila for the first time and the tension built nicely by the makers just before this sequence. The scene where Anahita discovers that she can 'be a man' is amusing.

On the flipside, the writing gets too convenient. A big issue is that things happen all of a sudden. Anahita and Bobby's romance springs out of the blue; it is sure to astonish the audience. Similarly, the tiff between Shikha and Anahita occurs all of a sudden. In the same fashion, Jugaaro becomes an overnight sensation and it's difficult to digest the same. What goes significantly against the show is how David Jones emerges a star and yet, no one is able to whiff out his reality. This is difficult to digest, considering how the media and social media work in today's times. If not for the media, Vikram Walia would have surely found out in no time about David. Also, Dylan's memory issue is not properly utilized. In fact, it is added just for the heck of it, as during his act as David, he never makes a blunder even once.

Do You Wanna Partner Performances: Tamannah Bhatia looks out of the world and performance wise, she’s first-rate. Her character has a bit of grey shades and it is well depicted by the actor. Diana Penty is equally efficient and manages to impress, especially in some challenging scenes. Jaaved Jaaferi is highly entertaining and does justice, even though the writing is not up to the mark. Neeraj Kabi expresses a lot through his wicked smile and as always, he is too good. Nakuul Mehta gets into the skin of his character. Shweta Tiwari is menacing but also neatly underplays it. Sufi Motiwala (Firdaus Makujina) manages to register. Rannvijay Singha (Kabir) is decent but gets a raw deal, especially in the finale. Koel Purie (Malini Mathur), Indraneil Sengupta and Ayesha Raza are dependable. Neeraj Sood (Darshan), Nitika Anand (Guggi Maasi), Vijayant Kohli (Kuldeep Kukreja) and Lokesh Mittal (Jagdish Prakash; Vikram Walia's aide) are fair. Sarah Anjuli (Hanna Kroos) gets to play a memorable character, but she is hardly there. Vidya Malvade (Lady Brewmaster) and Shaji Chaudhary (Tokas Pehalwan) are nice in cameo appearances.

Do You Wanna Partner music and other technical aspects: Songs are passable, with ‘Udd Jaavan’ being the best of the lot. Sangeet-Siddharth's background score is in sync with the show’s theme. In a crucial scene, the BGM seems similar to the tune of ‘Ilahi’ from YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI [2013]. Anubhav Bansal's cinematography is appropriate. Mansi Dhruv Mehta's production design is elite while Leepakshi Ellawadi's costumes are glamorous, especially the ones worn by Tamannah Bhatia and Diana Penty. Amit Kulkarni's editing is satisfactory.

Do You Wanna Partner Review Conclusion: On the whole, DO YOU WANNA PARTNER has a fresh subject and is depicted in a relatable manner. The performances of Tamannah Bhatia, Diana Penty and Jaaved Jaaferi are like an icing on the cake. However, the show suffers due to weak writing and plot points that are difficult to digest. Nevertheless, due to its strengths and engaging cast, the show is likely to draw in its target audience.
