Raveena Tandon on turning 53: “Life begins whenever you want it to”

On October 26, Bollywood’s timeless diva Raveena Tandon turned 53. Tell her she looks more like her daughter Rasha’s elder sister, and she bursts out laughing. “Ha! You’ll say that. But one must be realistic,” she smiles. “Rasha is now an actress and she’s the ‘now’ generation. I agree I look good, but I can’t be competing with my daughter for roles, can I?”

For Raveena, looking good isn’t vanity — it’s a reflection of self-care and inner balance. “A healthy lifestyle ultimately shows on you,” she explains. “You are what you eat, you are how you sleep. Your skin reflects what you put into your body. It’s a combination of everything — how you are in your heart, how you are in your soul. It all mirrors the person you become. For me, it’s about living a wholesome life — your diet, your behaviour, your kindness — it all shows on your face.”

“Life begins whenever you want it to”

Raveena refuses to be defined by age or timelines. “Life begins whenever you want it to — at 40, 50, maybe even at 70,” she says firmly. “Age has no demarcation for how you should feel or live. I’m the same person I’ve always been. I’m consistent in my feelings, in my relationships, and in who I am. You start living the moment you decide, ‘I want to start living now.’”

The actress turned nostalgic while reminiscing about her childhood birthdays. “My childhood birthdays were so sweet and simple,” she recalls fondly. “We used to play tug of war, ‘oranges and lemons sold for a penny,’ and have chutney sandwiches, tiny rasgullas, and wafers. Our return gifts were simple — pencils, erasers, and a few sweets. I thought that was the most beautiful way to celebrate.”

Times, she admits, have changed. “Our growing-up years in the ’80s and ’90s were much simpler. But yes, as parents, we all want to give the best to our kids, so I don’t blame anyone. I always tried to keep my children’s birthdays simple too. But now they’ve grown up and do their own thing — so I’m off the hook,” she laughs.

At 53, Raveena Tandon embodies the grace of someone who has lived every phase of her life with passion — an actress, a mother, and a woman who continues to redefine what aging beautifully truly means.
