EXCLUSIVE: Mastiii 4 actress Ruhi Singh on the 8-hour work shift debate: "To each its own. It depends on what stage of life you're in, what's happening in your life; if I have my way…"
Ruhi Singh, who will be seen in next week’s release Mastiii 4, recently completed 10 years as a film actor. The charming actress spoke exclusively with Bollywood Hungama about her journey and a lot more.
In her debut film, Calendar Girls (2015), she plays the role of a confident actress whose producers are too happy with her social media updates as its exciting the audience for their film. In real life, is social media activeness as important as shown in Calendar Girls?
Ruhi Singh explained, “Firstly, thank you for bringing that up. Mayuri Chauhan from Calendar Girls is very close to my heart. People still bring up a lot of my dialogues from the film. In Calendar Girls, people used to say about my character, ‘Yeh ladki bahut aage jaayegi’. When I meet those who have seen the film and when I excitedly tell them about my upcoming projects, they tell me, ‘Yeh ladki bahut aage jaayegi’ (smiles).”
She added, “There was another favourite dialogue of mine, which sadly got cut (laughs). Tiwari says, ‘Aapke din aane waale hai’ and Mayuri says, ‘Tiwari ji, mere din nahin, mera toh zamana aayega’! I relate a lot to it in real life, as I am very optimistic. I tell this to myself every day, ‘Ruhi, just keep up the hard work’. As for social media, it’s very relevant and important. That’s how you connect with the youth. It’s a beautiful place to communicate and share. But social media has its cons as well. Hence, we should avoid getting conned and also spreading negativity. At times, you open Instagram and feel, ‘Everyone’s living such great lives. What’s happening with me?’. This kind of thinking should be avoided. It’s not always real. Hence, it’s very important to keep your mental health in place; I am a big advocate for it.”
Meanwhile, a hot topic of discussion today is whether it’s necessary for actors to work long hours or there should be fixed working hours for them. The debate became big after a recent episode involving Deepika Padukone, when she exited Kalki 2898 AD’s sequel as she asked for an 8-hour shift.
When asked for her views on this debate, Ruhi Singh said, “To each its own. It depends on what stage of life you’re in and also what kind of person you are and what’s happening in your life. So, it’s just a personal preference. If you ask me, and it might change in the future, but right now, if I have my way, I would love to be on the sets every single day. I am in love with my work and I am looking for more opportunities. It brings me a lot of happiness and satisfaction.”
What next in the pipeline? Ruhi replied, “Talks are going on, but I’d like to focus on one thing at a time. At present, Mastiii 4 is releasing. I hope people go for it, notice me and that it opens a lot of doors for me.”
Her Wikipedia page mentions that she’s also a singer. Ruhi Singh clarified, “I don’t know who wrote that (laughs). It’s all wrong. As a child, I wanted to be a pop star. Basically, I just loved being on stage. I have never been awkward; I have zero stage fright. Later, I started exploring my options and I tried my hand in singing, dancing etc. Eventually, I realized that acting is my first love. I go very deep when it comes to my emotions and also, I am not shy. That really helps in my performance.” She continued, “I approached the best acting coaches in Mumbai to hone my craft, like Atul Mongia, Neeraj Kabi, Abhay Joshi from NSD etc.”
When asked about her family, Ruhi said, “Both my parents have been fully supportive. I feel that every father should support their daughter in realizing her dreams. I want to achieve success so that my parents can be proud of me; that’s my only dream (smiles).”
