Shabana Azmi reacts to Mira Nair’s Son Winning New York Mayoral Race; “More power to Zohran!”

Zohran Mamdani, son of acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair and academic Mahmood Mamdani, has made history by becoming the first Muslim Mayor of New York City. Zohran secured 948,202 votes (50.6 percent), winning with 83 percent of the total vote count and defeating Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa as well as political heavyweight and former New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo.

This is no small feat for a politician of Indian origin in the United States, marking a significant moment of representation and inclusion in American politics.

Veteran actress and activist Shabana Azmi, a close friend of Mira Nair, expressed her immense joy at the news. “I am over the moon! Not only because Zohran is Mira and Mahmood’s son but because of who Zohran is and the hope he represents for social justice,” Shabana said.

Shabana, who worked with Mira Nair in The Reluctant Fundamentalist, has been following Zohran’s political journey closely. “I have been watching his campaign with great interest. In spite of all the negative publicity that was manufactured against him—with Donald Trump even pathetically saying, ‘I am better looking than him!’—Zohran stayed focused and dignified,” she added. “He is young and inspiring, and his message resonates deeply: ‘Politics is not something that is done to us; politics is something we do for ourselves—a bold vision of what we can achieve, not excuses for what hasn’t been done.’ More power to Zohran.”

Zohran Mamdani’s victory not only signals a generational shift in New York politics but also stands as a powerful symbol of inclusivity, resilience, and the global reach of Indian-origin achievers.
