Sonali Bendre doesn’t want a biopic made on her life: “I want that bit of authenticity in the character”

Veteran actor Sonali Bendre whose career spans more than three decades has made it clear she is not keen on a biopic about her life. In a recent exclusive conversation with Zoom, she explained her reasons and offered insight into her current creative focus.

When asked about the type of storytelling that excites her today, Bendre responded, “I do look for something which is a little more authentic, and by that I don’t mean it has to be only gritty and real. Sometimes, there can be a very authentic emotion in a very unreal situation. I want that bit of authenticity in the character, in the story that’s being told or that I’m reading.”

She added, “There are too many stories around us - every time you scroll through social media, there are little stories. What attracts me is when I can believe it or identify with it. When there is authenticity, it touches something in every person. Human emotions are human emotions as long as they are authentic, they don’t really change that much.”

Regarding the prospect of someone making a biopic of her life, Bendre kept things candid and light-hearted. When asked about her biography on screen, she described the idea as “Very dull,” she chuckles. She went on to say, “I’m sure there are fantastic writers who’ll come to me with a fabulous story. I’ll be ready and waiting to do it.”

She revealed that, at the moment, she finds the most joy in acting and hosting while balancing home life and “simple pleasures”, such as organising and decluttering, and being comforted by food.

Asked to pick a favourite from her filmography, Bendre smiled and said, “It’s yet to come.” Summing up her journey in three words, she smiled and said, “Not done yet.”

In short, Sonali Bendre is clear she values authenticity over spectacle, genuine emotion over grand biographical projects. And while she’s not closing the door entirely to a life-story film, for now she’s happier exploring fresh narratives and staying grounded in the present.
