Sushmita Sen reveals Farah Khan’s hilarious reaction to her saree draping from Main Hoon Na: “Kya lungi baandhi hai?”
Sushmita Sen recently shared a fond behind-the-scenes memory from her iconic red saree sequence in Main Hoon Na, calling attention to how director Farah Khan intervened to perfect her look. In an interview with Divya Jain, she revealed that filming in biting cold made the glamorous appearance quite challenging.
As she recalled, “That red saree I was made to wear came out freezing cold. On top of that, Farah Khan put a massive storm fan because Chandni’s hair needs to fly all the time. If Chandni is in the classroom, her hair is flying; if she’s crying, her hair is flying; even if it’s raining, her hair is flying. It was a mandatory requirement for the character.”
Sushmita also admitted that she was reluctant to stick to just sarees for the entire film especially since it was her first time working with Shah Rukh Khan. She laughed as she remembered telling Farah, “‘Please don’t do this to me. This is my first film with Shah Rukh; I want to wear 50,000 different costumes.’ But she was like, ‘Trust me, you’re in a saree and that’s it.’”
However, Farah wasn’t satisfied with the way Sushmita had draped the saree. On Sushmita’s first appearance in that red saree, Farah reportedly remarked, “Kya lungi baandhi hai? Geeta, take her back.” After that, the saree was tied lower, with a long pallu — which made Sushmita wary: “I was worried the whole time ‘Bas yeh gir na jaye!’”
One of the most memorable moments was Sushmita’s entrance across from Shah Rukh Khan, where she playfully lifted her hand so the pallu would brush his face. She said, “These are moments that only happen on set when actors capture magic in the moment. But Farah being Farah made us do it again and again because she wanted multiple angles. That moment set the tone for Chandni and Ram.”
Despite limited screen time, Sushmita praised Farah’s dedication, adding, “Though my role wasn’t huge, she made sure Chandni made an impact every time she appeared on screen.”
