EXCLUSIVE: Gurmmeet Singh decodes Sonal Chauhan's SHOCKING climax scene in Mirzapur The Movie: “Audiences didn’t know whether to laugh at Chandu or feel bad for Mumtaz...we were SCARED the scales would tip in Ravi Kishan’s favour”

The recently released Mirzapur The Movie has several memorable scenes. But one sequence that truly stands out is the moment when Mumtaz (Sonal Chauhan) gets shot, that too unexpectedly by none other than Chandu Puncture (Satendra Soni). The reactions from the audience were one of a kind – some were shocked, some couldn’t stop laughing and some laughed in sheer disbelief! In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Mirzapur The Movie director Gurmmeet Singh opened up about this sequence and the challenges associated with it.

Gurmmeet Singh said, “Ravi Kishan’s character Babban was being loved a lot. Also, in Mirzapur, there’s no concept of a hero or villain. Everyone is grey and you understand their motivations. Aisa nahin hai ki koi aadmi ekdum bura hai. You do get attached to them. We were very scared because we didn’t want the scales to tip in favour of Babban. Then, the audiences would not have been happy that our heroes won. So, we kept wondering what would happen, as so many emotions were riding on him.”

He continued, “Thankfully, the balance was achieved. Audiences took them as larger-than-life characters. They wanted Guddu (Ali Fazal), Munna (Divyenndu) and Kaleen Bhaiyya (Pankaj Tripathi) to win. Also, that scene was the very purpose behind the character of Chandu Puncture. We knew that we wanted someone innocent to kill Mumtaz and that it needed to happen by mistake. It wasn’t out of aggression. So, Chandu killing her felt a little bittersweet. Audiences were left wondering whether they should enjoy Chandu’s humour or feel bad for Mumtaz. It was a bizarre dichotomy that played out in the film.”

Gurmmeet Singh further remarked, “In fact, the emotion landed most strongly when Chandu dies. That’s when audiences either gasped or went completely silent. Nevertheless, it was magical, almost like the olden days, when until we saw the audience reacting, we didn’t know what to expect from a scene.”

When asked about working with Ravi Kishan and whether he dropped any gems, Gurmmeet replied, “Ravi sir is absolutely entertaining. His public persona right now is that he’s all about fun and games. But he’s also a deep thinker. No wonder he plays dramatic scenes so beautifully. He has done more than 700 films and hence, he’s an institution in himself. He has seen so many ups and downs and has had such a vast journey. If you sit with him and listen to his conversations, kahan 3-3, 4-4 ghante nikal jaate hain, pata hi nahin chalta! We also used to really enjoy listening to his jokes and anecdotes.”
